Caliorbust: Would you passed stop pointing at South America and learn a few useful facts. While it is true that the virus itself is tiny, it gets propagated in water droplets, which are big enough to be stopped by most mask and filters. China is far from being the only country trying to establish some prestige and integrity. Just look at much of the bunk that has come out of te White House. South America is relatively small and has no more poor or uneducated people than the USA. Colombia is doing much more in lockdowns and controls than most states are. The people are responding to the emergency when desperate measure are required. Colombia is woefully illprepared for Coronavirus, if it spreads(and the odds are high it will) the medical system will crash and burn-no doctors, no nurses, no supplies, no PPE, no ventilators and no money.. I understand Cali not wanting to get sick.. Let's be real..

Expat: I know that you are totally bored but can't you at least refer your cryptic comments to what people have said!
I said nothing about the size of the USA population. I said nothing at all about the number of ICUs.
Ohh.excuse me.. it is quite clear what I was talking about!
And when was your name Caliorbust?

South America is relatively small and has no more poor or uneducated people than the USA. Colombia is doing much more in lockdowns and controls than most states are. The people are responding to the emergency when desperate measure are required. It's not that simple tubes, propagating in this sense means 'spread out', but the virus is not glued to the water droplets it will detach itself and enter the N-95 filter or penetrate the tissue of a regular face mask.
The problem with viruses is, if an infected person coughs or talks, corona patients don't sneeze, he expels thousands of viruses, most of them hit the ground or dissipate but a few find their way to the liquid in mouth, nose or eyes of a nearby person and an other one is infected. So these millions of people out there wearing a mask but no eye protection are not protected at all but may prevent infecting others if they them-self are infected and cough or talk
That's why extensive testing of suspects or contacts is absolutely necessary to keep the infected out of circulation.
The US has a poverty rate of 12%, South America's overall poverty rate is 26%, the highest and first place has Surinam with 70% (maybe they regret kicking the Dutch out?) and the lowest is Brazil with 4%. Colombia comes in at 4th. place with 28% after Bolivia and former British Guyana. The low poverty rate in Brazil always surprised me to no end, but all we ever see of Brazil's poverty are the Favelas in Rio.
I disagree that Colombians are responding to the lock-down, in some low estrato barrios life goes on as usual.
Even drones were used to record it and it was shown in the news.

I live in and I love living in Colombia so of course I am very concerned about Coronavirus .
My money (my children and grandchildren) live in the US. I honestly am more concerned about the impact on the US as they are spending money at a pace never seen before and I don't think anyone is paying attention.. I really think that the US (and eventually my beloved USD) will suffer. I believe that the crazy amount of money being spent,(all borrowed) is going to create inflation and an enemic economy.. I like Trump but his comments about spending all this money because interest is almost zero is a load of crap.. When history is written the real story will be how the world's economy was crushed and caused more devastation than the virus..

An other desperate attempt for someone trying to save his enterprise by killing hundreds of thousands if not millions of people with the herd immunity.
Look where the UK stands today with that concept, that idea almost killed their minister.
It smells of formation of a master race, healthy and sane young people without the useless and burdensome elderly and minorities.

I should explain, the reason I am dead set against herd immunity are new findings that the coronovirus attacks and impairs the survivors immune system with lasting health sequels, similar to HIV. Herd immunity is definitely a move into the wrong direction. Social distancing seems to be the only sane method until a safe vaccine is found.
Also want to share why I have little faith in face masks as protection besides many negative comments from leading scientists. Without eye protection they don't help you anyway, because your eyes are just as vulnerable as your nose and mouth. Italy is a good example of their mediocre effectiveness, 80 doctors and more than 20 nurses have died while treating infected patients and y'all can be sure they wore high grade face masks. We should be wearing them to show our social responsibility and avoid dirty looks but the only sure way to avoid an infection is keeping a safe distance from our fellow man, avoid line ups and public transportation and after you touched something an infected person may have touched wash your hands for half a minute with lots of soap at the first opportunity. Latex gloves help but you have to pay attention when you take them off and never reuse them.

Brazil, Colombia , Argentina, Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, Chile, Bolivia, the Guianas, Surinam? BTW ..although there is a lot of visual evidence of poverty in major US inner cities..I do not in anyway believe Brazil is poverty rate is only 4% and the US is 12%. Somone is obviously using different definitions of poverty in both cases.

This is only common sense. I have been saying this all along. Another finding in Italy is that most (90)%of the people in Italy who died where over 70 and had pre'existing conditions..and multiple severe sickneses ( cancer, heart conditions) and it was not sure whether they died directly from the virus or one of the other sicknesses. Another theory is that the COVID 19 virus was always present ( but in a weaker form) and its presense was reflected in the higher flu deaths inprevious years.

They keep using Zika virus as an example. I knew people that had it. It was weaker than the flu. Cali..what if they keep us all locked up and world economy shut for 6 or 8 months, they keep printing money, the inflátion rate goes way up like in Venezuela world wide, your pension goes to 20% of its value and half or more of those people you are supporting starve to death? Ever consider that scenario?

all the countries for the most part, are printing money they cant afford to print. it comes down to after this chinese virus goes away, who spent the most, who printed the most, whos in the most debt, who can back up their debt and who cant. either way, i see the chinese coming out of this the best because the world will not punish the Chinese for the virus and will keep buying their products . if you look on facebook, yahoo news, lot of Huawei advertising, pushing their products and lot of Chinese trolls pushing pro Chinese stories and comments.

It won’t be the end of the world for the bigger economies I full expect the USA to shrug off most of the Coronavirus by late this year end of 3rd and the 4 th quarter. Most important is not re-opening the country to soon I’m more in the after July 4 camp rather than late May or June. We have gone this far might as will get it right and play it a bit safe

And with infrastructure spending the whole US is going to be like driving through the hood and seeing all the new shiny Cadillacs but everyone will be smoking pot and broke..

Maybe it’s just me and where I’m living but the only thing I’ve heard anyone cry about was cabin fever. I don’t know anyone hurting for cash the majority of people I know are being paid in full or earning more on unemployment. I don’t see any new ghettos just the ones that will always be ghettos long before and after corona.

I have to admit with the extra 600 on top of unemployment every week, I'm not in a huge hurry to go back anymore. That is only because I'm getting a lot of stuff at home. I really hope end of April/May though.

Western European countries talking about relaxing on restrictions soon, lets wait how that pans out.
There is no easy answer, the virus tells us what to do, we don't have much control over it.
Lots of warm weather coming up, it will prevent many pneumonia infections at least, cut down on the death toll.

Aljazeera just printed it, if you look below the article, it says: 'The views expressed in this article are the author's own and do not necessarily reflect Al Jazeera's editorial stance.'
Aljazeera prints articles few other News outlets would touch.
Elex, the author is not from Qatar, she is Haitian American and lives in Berlin, Germany, got her PhD at Princeton University. I see mostly true history though, she didn't make any of it up, even if sounds unpopular.
That's what you get when you take people out of their familiar environment that will stick with them for many generations and try to conform them to a different more advanced culture.
Europeans are going to be faced with the same problem, having absorbed millions of mostly uneducated and undisciplined, women and dog hating middle Easterners and of a fanatic, murderous religion to boot.
That is why the world consists of different countries where people of the same culture get along peacefully.
The formation of countries like Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia and Syria enforced by Western powers after the world-wars has resulted in nothing but bloodshed.

Nairobi governor gives out cognac to 'kill' virus
The flamboyant governor of Kenya's capital Nairobi has distributed bottles of cognac to the poor, saying it protects against the new coronavirus, though the drink maker and national government chided him for propagating a myth.
Mike Mbuvi Sonko, known for his chunky gold jewellery, impromptu raps and arrest last year, posted images of Hennessy bottles tucked inside food packages with flour and other staples on social media this week.
"We are giving some small bottles of Hennessy in the food packs that we are giving to our people," Sonko said in a video, wearing a face mask and shield.
LVMH, the world's biggest luxury goods group which makes Hennessy cognac, said Sonko was wrong and warned that "our brand or any other alcoholic beverage does not protect against the virus".
