Something to think about: France has 66 million people, Colombia has 50 million France has close to a 100.000 cases, almost 9000 deaths and over 7000 in ICU stations. Last reported daily deaths were around 800, figures for yesterday aren't out yet. Wouldn't it be prudent for Colombians to stay home for a couple or three months instead of provoking a disaster? How many ICU stations suitable for corona virus patients does Colombia have, anybody knows? '750' and most large provinces in the South and East of the country don't have any. colombia cant, the people would leave the hoses and protest and the country doesnt have the resources " money" or infrastructure to feed everyone for free for that long.
would make more sense to make sure everyone had masks, gloves, hand sanitizer and strict orders," leave the house without, go to jail. closer than 6 ft, , go to jail. "

Colombians have very close family ties and will be even more upset if thousands of their loved ones die. Most don't have the money for a dignified funeral either, it's at least a million two Colombians know how to survive on arroz, fríjol, yuca and agua panela. None of that is costly

None of that is costly I am talking to quite a few Colombians, and many who were making 1 or 2 or even 3 million, dont have any savings (probably 90% of the population) and are wondering how they are going to pay the bills and put food on the table. Government is only helping estrato 1 types, and even that, very basically, not 3 and 4 and even some 5s who suddenly lost all their income and have no savings. People are getting really really ansy. They wont take this beyond April 27th. You have to realize Calipro, 95% dont have an outside source of income like a gringo paying their bills. And they dont have Trudeau giving unemployed $2000 a month like in Canada. Besides much longer than 5 weeks (40 days is your normal maximum quarantine historically-that is where the name came from) that you have diimishing returns. If it doesnt work in 35 or 40 days, it never will. Hopefiully the new cases go down and The Government has a plan for massive testing and containment, and is using this time to finalize these plans.

They need to start doing antibody testing everywhere. If you have had it you get a special ID badge and a colored wrist band with some security features so it cant be counterfeited. Or if you have had it its put in a searchable database listed under your cedula so the police can check it if your out. Those people can be out with no restrictions. The US especially needs to be doing this so people can get back to work.

A bit of optimism here. Looks like a Lot of European Countries (Spain, Italy Germany and a few others ) are starting to go into the other side of the curve and the 2 or 3 week lock down has started to take effect..daily cases are trending down. As far as Ecuador and Colombia, because of erratic data and poor testing facilities (up until now) it is hard to tell, espescially ithe case of Colombia as we have been in Quarantine les than 2 weeks. www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries

A contribution of C $ 340,000 (about one billion pesos) will be made by the Government of Canada to support the fight against the coronavirus in Colombia, especially to address the mental health challenges that have arisen as a consequence of the disease www.eluniversal.com.co/colombia/340-mil-dolares-canadienses-donara-ese-pais-para-lucha-contra-coronavirus-FE2655546Good to see. Hopefully more rich countries can lend support to Colombia. Colombia has gone to the World bank and the IMF to borrow much needed funds. Hopefully the majority of this money goes to the poor and middle class.

I just learned an interesting fact: Columbia County, the county to the east of where I live, went from 16 to 54 cases in one night. Now what does that have to do with this thread here in Colombia? Well one of the earliest cases was transmitted by a Colombiano who had just visited family in NYC back in February returned to his home here and infected a bunch of his co-workers at the local potato chip factory!

At the moment the virus is ravaging in the UK, almost a 1000 people have died in the last 24 hours. An other country who believed the herd effect is the answer and let the virus spread and Sweden may be next but that country has an extremely low population density, which helps tremendously. Look at New York for comparison. Germany has a comparatively small number of virus deaths having over 100.000 infections. It may have something to do with the high number of ICU beds with ventilators, 28.000 of them in Germany and they are working on extending the number to 50.000. Germany has twice the population of Colombia but Colombia has only 750 ICU stations and the number of ventilator equipment is not clear. Italy, Spain and the UK have between 4000 and 5000 ventilated ICU stations which may account for the high number of casualties in those countries. One problem with ventilators is that most of them were occupied by pneumonia patients before corona and they are now sorting out patients with the best chance of survival and by age of course to connect them to ventilators. The medical term for that is 'triage'. With summer coming up in the northern hemisphere it should reduce the number of pneumonia patients drastically though.

I have seen at least 12 bodies on the highway due to.moto accidents in my time in Colombia. How many have you seen Cali?

Have never seen a dead moto rider in person here, Elex, most of them seem to miraculous recover after an accident because all seem to wear helmets or they'll get stopped by transito, except in small towns, but I've seen quite a few who recovered with one leg or without an arm. I bought old bikes and restored them like new since I was 15, slowly worked my way up (my best friends dad had a car repair shop, that helped) until I bought my first car in Canada in 1963, a 1949 Chevy.
I must say, most of the bike riders here are pretty good in traffic, some are a bit ruthless though. Lots of young women here ride bikes to work.

I remember when I lived in Florida when a hurricane was coming it would be non stop on the news for 7 to 10 days and it would drive me crazy.. The news guy standing in the rain and even a mild breeze would be the source of drama and holding on to a tree..non stop drama. But frankly this Coronavirus crap has been going on for months and I am so tired of hearing about it. Anyone else had enough yet?
