Political Scientist William Spaniel on the war:
But in today's news, Putin is calling in 300.000 reservists and is 'welcoming' the decision of 4 Russian populated provinces in the Southeast to hold a referendum to belong to the Russian Federation, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporitzia and Kherson. If the vote goes through the Ukraine can not use weaponry supplied by NATO countries because it would automatically involve NATO in a direct war with Russia, something Biden is opposed to, according to Al Jazeera news. In my opinion the war would be over soon, because it doesn't make much sense for the Ukraine to continue fighting for a war it cannot possibly win and Russia will declare, it's objectives for the 'special military operation' have been met.
During the 1920ties the Soviets have forced many Russians to populate Eastern European countries, the so called Soviet satellite states and Russians who live there today are the offspring of those early settlers and most have never been in Russia and know it only from Television. Not surprising the Russian speakers have been treated like second class citizens by the better educated locals something that created lots of unrest and Putin wants to go down in history as 'liberating' his countrymen in need. And adding on to the Russian Empire on the way to liberating Russians. What is stopping him is NATO, to which the Ukraine unfortunately doesn't belong.

vikingo said: Yeah but Sweden and Finland DID join NATO and that really torqued off Putin! So now he is mobilizing conscripts, which put a sad twist on how the war is fairing out for Russia. They said that young men are leaving Russia quicker than wives attending a bean soup and beer festival with their spouses! Conscripts have only basic, (if that) knowledge of warfare and I predict will be slaughtered by the masses. My hope is that when Putin decides to push that big red button that someone in the chain will countermand it leading to an overthrow and probably direct control of the country by the military, at least for a short amount of time. It was General William Westmoreland who said, "The military doesn't start wars. Politicians start wars!"

By the time the conscripts have basic training the war will be over. He now has decided to call 300.000 reserves to send to the front, because too many mothers are furious about having lost their young sons.

Seems like US propaganda. The administration cant admit its not going well or how to they justify to keep sending billions to Ukraine. Time will tell.
But on a slightly different topic. Ukraine will not have any men left. Ukraine was always a hot spot for foreign dating sites. These sites will be flooded with women as there will be a big shortage of men due to the war.

scumbuster said: You know when my ex decided to leave me, I was hellbent on finding a woman from Eastern Europe that would be a knockout. I read the stories and would get pop-up to those Russian/Ukrainian websites all the time. I felt compelled to do just that. But then I found a blog by this fellow (Canadian) who lived in Moscow for 8 years. In short, he pretty much said to avoid them like the plague. "Go to countries in Central or South America to find a suitable mate. Try Colombia for godsakes!" he proclaimed. So I followed his advice and the rest is history!

My accountant in California went to Moscow to see the sights, apparently one of his ancestors came from Russia. He fell in love with the tour-guide brought her to the States and married her. When we talked on the phone he told the good news, happy as can be. When my next tax appointment came up I drove to Pacific Beach and there she was, helping him in the office, tall and slender, looked like a model but with a very harsh English accent. She had a smart 10 year old son who he adored and all seemed well. At the following year's appointment she was still there, stalking around in his offices with her high heels. The year after that he looked sad and depressed and he confessed it's not going well; if you're getting 4 years out of them you're doing well he said. And low and behold at the following appointment she was gone. I didn't ask why but could imagine she found out, once legally in the States she can do better, with someone younger and attractive and a lot more generous.

If I'm allowed a different view; the idea is not so much for NATO countries to win the war for the Ukraine, but to weaken Russia and disburse their war material and undermine the military's morality, especially the common soldier for whose life the Kremlin obviously doesn't give a damn. Everything seems to go as planned: Russia's losses in manpower and equipment are enormous, Putin is seriously worried about the negative response and demonstrations at home, Russia's worldwide prestige except for India and China is totally damaged, and Russia is more or less isolated, the populace is unhappy about the sanctions and the Russian economy is slowly but surely on a downward spiral. I dare say the unfortunate situation that 45% of the population in the Ukraine speaks Russian at home, about the same percentage as Ukrainians and 97% are Russian-speakers in the Crimea; let Russia have the Crimea and the 4 Provinces were a plebiscite is held at the moment. It is unfortunate that the mayor industry in the Ukraine is located in the Eastern provinces were most of the Russians live but it can't be helped if you have a current population of 43 million of which almost 20 million are Russians. The division of the Ukraine, hatred and bickering between both groups must stop to prevent a civil war which is sure to follow in the near future.

I think its like a 90% chance it was the US. Russia already had control of the flow of gas and didnt make sense they would blow it. It actually hurts Russia's negotiating position. The US was afraid a cold winter would break away Germany from the coalition.

The Russian sham annexation of 4 Ukrainian provinces populated mainly by Russians is a done deal whether the West recognizes it or not. The Ukrainians have decided to keep fighting for their occupied land, why, I'm troubled to understand since the Ukraine has the largest Russian population outside of the Russian Federation. Two of the provinces are still to a large portion in Ukrainian hands so the fighting will continue. There is no love lost by the Ukrainians for the Russians since the early 1930ties because of the Holodomor en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HolodomorYugoslavia was a good example that different ethnic groups can't live together peacefully, established after WW1 consisting of several ethnic and religious groups which were ruled by their communist leader Tito with an iron fist until his death in 1980 and right after all of them were on each others throat and all hell broke loose into a merciless civil war until 5 new countries were established by the UN. To this day there is still a conflict between Serbia and Kosovo for mainly religious reasons. The Ukraine is in a situation not to be envied, they can't throw out of the country nearly half their population, folks who were born and raised their children there because the forced settlement of Russians in the Ukraine by the Soviets goes back exactly a hundred years. Few have ever been in Russia but their language and culture is Russian which doesn't go over well with Ukrainians, because the Russians have no desire to integrate or learn to speak Ukrainian.

The Ukraine is making renewed efforts to join NATO. Since a membership of NATO requires that the applying country has total control over it's territory, the only way I can see a Nato membership is if the Ukraine agrees to the Russian annexation of the 4 provinces in exchange for a total Russian troop withdrawal and a peace treaty between the 2 countries. That would also include that the Ukraine totally withdraws from the 2 provinces that aren't as yet completely under Russian control. That way Russian strategic objectives would have been met, but a huge question remains; will Russia insist that the Ukraine will agree to never join NATO? In that case the fighting will continue until one or the other side gives up or the killing and destruction in the Ukraine goes on. The Ukraine has no chance of winning though without heavy arms support from NATO countries. It will be interesting to watch how this pans out.

India has always been a lap-dog for Russia going back to its ties when it was the USSR. That is why the US, until recently, supported Pakistan in the constant fight for what is known as the Kashmir district. Why the US continues to do business with those countries that are counter to our desires is beyond me.

Since salt water entered the pipelines they are no longer serviceable, a loss of 15bn., financed by 5 different international corporations of Russia, the Netherlands, France, Austria and Germany with Russian Gasprom being the mayor shareholder.
Whomever destroyed them is fine with me, it was upsetting to see Europeans financing Putin's war with such enormous sums. Europeans can get gas if need to, it will just be a lot more expensive and maybe they need to relax their strict environmental protection a bit for the time being.
