Everyone knows the speed cameras in Colombia are becoming more prevalent and that the fines are quite large, but here is a new one to me. Some areas Cameras can also scan number plates to make sure your car has SOAT etc, and fine you if you are out of date.
Due to Mrs me thinking I had paid SOAT, and me thinking she had paid, we drove around for a few days without the proper cover. As we occasionally do, we went online to see if we had any speeding fines. We had three fines, all from the same camera, however they said nothing about speeding, but stated for driving without the proper documentation.
We tried to think what the hell it was about when we realized it was the SOAT. The cameras on Calle 10 going up from exito record the number plates and do a check for registration etc.
Our fines were 689,000 pesos each. We had to do a course for each one, which reduced them by 50%.
A very stupid and costly mistake, and much better than having had an accident and thus no insurance, or being pulled over by the police and having the car towed but I had no idea the cameras had this capability.
Here is a site to check your fines

Look at the brite side if you had been pulled over at a inspection stop it would of cost you around 2 million cop.The fine.towing and storage.
Me and another poster on here both got caught in the last few months with the same problem.I was lucky because I was going into Zipa from a back road and for 50k they let me turn around and go back to my home town.

They also check that cars older than 6 years have had their required mechanical check.

Camera-based traffic enforcement in Colombia is so much more invasive than what I've ever seen in the US.

How do you go on line to see if you have any fines? We don't go often go through areas with cameras, but you never know.. Thx

Funny how Colombia is so fully embracing a technology that will help it squeeze even more money from its residents. But has not bothered to adopt any that would help it fill pot holes.

"pay your fines online" You need to nip it in the bud;pull one of the nice officers aside and hand him your papers with a 50k COP note accidently placed in its folds. When in Rome...

My attorney gf works in this area. The organization she works for helps municipalities put this system in place; not just the technology part but the whole support and administrative part behind it.
I tell her that I feel like my gf works for ISIS

This happened to my wife car too. 4 of them. We paid 1 and rechecked the other 3 with the argument, that we were not notified at time. But we have till now no answer. There was a high court decision that you have be notified in 2 or 3 work days of the fotomulta.

Yes bickmed, I got caught in the same place that dandl93 got. Cost us a $50,000 'on the spot' fine. My wife was very worried that the car was going to get towed to the impound yard and everything inside the car was going to be stolen. It was a scam ........a trap. They wanted us to pay the bribe. I think they had no intention of taking the car away. Too much paper work ........anyway it was raining and we all know Colombian cops are allergic to rain! Most of my driving is done on back roads between small towns so I don't expect camera fines for a while yet.

I probably averaged getting a road check 5 or 6 times a year. All but one was in the area of the Home Center near Chia.
By the way. Has anyone been in the new Fontana Mall near Chia? Its right in that same area.

Do you think guys it is worth buying one of these radar detectors?

"Radar detectors" cops would probably confiscate them then offer to sell them back as a package deal ("fine"+ radar detect.)
Btw don't think of slipping out through Cll 170 via Suba - Chia.Cops routinely set up a surprise roadblock at the Y in the road. We got stopped there in SNL's car - she was driving without a licence, she told the cops a thief smashed her window at a Bogota street light and stole her purse...she was going to pay but I interrupted her and told the traffic cop "bureaucrats make it impossible to get a replacement"Forgot to mention cops should get their priorities straight and deal with crime.

no photo technology counters the camera flash with it's own flash. expensive, but much cheaper than these rip-off fines. there is an easier and cheaper way to out monster the monster.

In Australia all the hoons (car enthusiasts) put a clear perspex cover over their number plate. The reasoning is that most of the photos only show reflected light........but from directly behind the numbers/letters are clearly visible (which is the law).

Do you think guys it is worth buying one of these radar detectors? All the years I have been driving here only been pulled over 3 times for speeding (I drive fast every where I go) So I have 150k in speeding pay offs.Cheaper then buying a radar detector. I do think it is a great idea to install a 360 deg camera in you car.If a moto hits you it is always the cars fault except if you have it on camera.Better investment to me.

you are using 1st world analysis to measure 3rd world protocol. dan alluded to it earlier, it is rare to get pulled over here, so the cheap answer is obvious.

A couple of the towns along the SF Pen got sued over those cameras, and one, SSF, had to pay a million bucks and took them down. What was going on was that the the company that had the conssesion and the cities colluded to speed up the the green and yellow lights to catch more cars in the intersection. f@0#@g corrupt aholes.

You may have something there. What if you used one of those lenses that go on computer monitors so that the only thing that is visible is that which is view head on?

Can you get fined if they find a coating on the plates? Colombia or US?

The second number they are asking for on this site, would that be your license plate? Colombia has figured out a unique way to get around from hiring a large force of transit police and the associated bribes by using traffic cameras.

What Colombia has figured out is Now the politicians can get their bribes along with the cops. The politicians get theirs from the Camera Co and the Cops keep to use their inspection stations as a private toll booth.

They have tons of red light, toll, and speed cameras here in Dallas. You pretty much have to figure there is always one watching you.
