I worked on the overhead traffic cameras that they use in Italy, and they are remarkably accurate. They take 3 or more images of the rear of the car and analyse the license plate details in a fraction of a second. They also analyse the size / type of the vehicle and the colour, to help identify false plates. They were tested at up to 300kmh at night!

I got nailed by one, and they are very detailed. My problem with them is that they sometimes juice the lights up to trap more people and make more money.r

The second number they are asking for on this site, would that be your license plate? Colombia has figured out a unique way to get around from hiring a large force of transit police and the associated bribes by using traffic cameras. You can put your plate in there, but you can leave it blank. I got confused by the big "informante" below the box and kept trying to click on that, and nothing happened. You have to click on the tiny link labelled "consultar" that is right below where you enter your info.

I have only seen radar trap setups a couple of times in fifteen years. Both times were on the Via Panamericana between Cali to points north. There are some signs along that highway that say speed is checked by radar but I think any actual checking is very irregular.

There was an ElPais article a while back that described the lengths caleños go to to avoid the photomultas for pico y placa. In one example passengers got out of the car and pushed it through the intersection feigning a breakdown and of course covering the plate as they pushed.

Can you get fined if they find a coating on the plates? Colombia or US? yes,in Canada;some provinces did away with photo radar.
