"other than cheap living and easy women, colombia really does not rate." To be fair to Colombia, the natural landscape is spectacular in many parts of the country. And the climate is perfect, depending on your altitude. agree with the natural landscape statement - no qualms there. as far as perfect climate, would have to disagree based on the fact that we have had less than 24 hours of sunshine in the last 30 days. pretty much living in seattle type weather at the moment. however, when the sun returns it is pretty hard to beat considering the fact that you don't have to have ac/heat. perfect, no. i would describe it as good weather the preponderance of the time. medellin is too hot during the summer months. bogota is too chilly during the winter months. thinking more and more about san diego. this thread is dead. time to kill the wandering requiem.

"bogota is too chilly during the winter months""
Depends where you're from, I'm from the North of England, up near Scotland, and for me Bogotá is never chilly, I rarely wear more than a shirt and often sit on the bench outside my apartment in a tee shirt sun bathing as the Colombians hurry past in their overcoats scarves and gloves.

IMHO Bogotá is too chilly every night.

What is the point of argument/discussion about which place/city/town has the BEST weather?
Different people (for whatever reason) have different preferrences for 'ideal' weather.
If you don't like the weather where you are currently living ....move to a different location. Too easy!

Agree. People always ask me why I don't have a jacket and when I first moved here people stared because I walked to the gym in shorts. I think it's ridiculous how Rolos bundle up their babies as if we were in Antartica. I live the weather here!!!

I'm off out now, I will take an Uber and I can guarantee that for me it will be like a sauna inside the car and my wife will zip her coat up as I open my window. It's nothing whatsoever to do with the place, it's the person and how he or she reacts to the weather. As a child I remember waking up and the windows in my room had a thick layer of ice on them - on the inside - and now when people tell me "Bogotá is cold today" or "tonight is chilly" I just think back, they've never experienced cold weather here and they don't know what a winter is. I've been here 6 years and I couldn't tell you when the "winter months"are - it never changes enough for me to notice.

Debates on dead expats and weather in prefered cities;comforting to see every once and a while someone will deviate from normality.

TheBro- I knew Mitch for a brief time after he arrived in Cartagena in 2004 and can tell you some things about his life during that time. Unfortunately, most if it will not be positive. Please note that I didn't see him after 2006 or so. Mitch originally came to Colombia because he had become disillusioned with living in the Dominican Republic. He was desperately trying to sell his "mansion" (as he called it) in the DR so that he could buy a place in Cartagena (which he eventually did). He seemed pretty cool at first. He did have a decent sense of humor and liked 80s heavy metal music, as I did but he quickly struck me as one of those guys who could leave a good first impression on someone but eventually you realize how complicated, negative, and racist he was. Once you got to know him, he would often go off on rants about how horrible Canada is or in regards to anyone who had crossed him (or about any perceived slights from anyone). Mitch could really hold a grudge and could be very insulting to practically anyone (especially when he was drinking, which was nightly from what I could tell at the time). Mitch considered himself "above" anyone who had to work a normal job for a living; basically, you were inferior because you weren't as smart (fortunate) as he was. He apparently started some sort of ISP in Canada and then sold it for big bucks at a relatively young age. He struck me as extremely insecure and the only thing that made him feel special was the fact that he was relatively wealthy. As a result, he used to flaunt his wealth- buying his so-called "penthouse," buying a Porsche and constantly driving it around Boca Grande/Laguito, and generally reminding anyone who would listen that he was well off or had more money than you. Of course, this turned off most people who came into contact with him. He was such a bitter guy I eventually just avoided him altogether. A couple of quick stories about Mitch- About a year after he moved to Cartagena, he met this girl from Barranquilla who couldn't have been older than 19 or 20 and hired her to be his "asistente." I swear to God he would introduce her as this even though she lived with him in Playa Del Mar (before he started renting it out) and was clearly in a physical relationship with her. Anyway, he would always treat her like crap (almost like a slave) and it was just hard to watch. Well, fast forward 2 years later and apparently Mitch had no idea that Colombia has a 2 year "common law marriage" law and the exact DAY she moved in 2 years prior, she sued him. lol I think he ended up just giving her a payoff just to go away but I remember his pride was pretty hurt for being outsmarted by someone so "below" his status. From what I understand, most expats who were there at the time started shunning him. Mitch also had massive liposuction surgery during that time. He was very overweight and I guess wanted to take a short-cut to look better. The thing is after he had the surgery, he didn't bother to start exercising, or to start eating healthy, and he would continue to down a bottle of rum a night. So he quickly packed back on the pounds and then some. It was really a shame as I remember him being incredibly sore from the surgery for weeks after, only to pack the pounds right back on. I do find it ironic that Mitch wouldn't allow mongers in his Medellin hotel because pretty much the only girls he associated with in Cartagena were hookers. I can't say that I was friends with Mitch at the end but I do hope he's at peace now. You always hope that a troubled soul like Mitch will find some way to get it together and find happiness. It sounds like his body just finally gave out as he drank a lot and was overweight. I was surprised to hear about the pills in the news story.

I can't get my head around how they leave their coats on indoors. I've been with two doctors all afternoon, one had a poncho type thing on and the other a scarfe and coat, I swear it felt like a greenhouse in the office, the sun was shining and all the windows were closed.

I appreciate information about Mitch. Although I lost contact with him at time he had his company here in Canada., we were friends. I've seen recent picture of him from his brother and was surprised to see how much he changed from how he was when I knew him. I knew he sold his company for a lot of money and I know he was in Colombia but that was all the information I had., I knew nothing more. Until his passing when I was notified by his brother. I only regret that I never tried harder to contact him while he was alive. But what can be done now., nothing but to say farewell Mitch R.I.P. And move on. I only hope everyone here can forgive Mitch for any wrong doing he may have done to you. Again thanks for everything take care.

When I get visitors from Bogs or Pereira, they love the weather here. But the ones from Cali whine about the cold like if they were in Chicago in winter.

Cali is ok at night when the breezes flow down the cordillera, specially in the West End. At mid day it is hell on earth. Then again, you can be up at K18 in 30 minutes.

What you like or comfortable with also changes. After living in Cartagena for basically 4 years I am now use to the heat. Waking up this morning in Sydney it was 20 celsius, 68 fahrenheit inside my house and I was freezing. I use to enjoy swimming in the ocean in Sydney. Now after getting use to the warm Caribbean seas I really struggle swimming now in colder water.

I was living in the north east US most of my life, and like Suba, I find Bogota climate to be quite comfortable. In the beginning of traveling there many years ago, I would always comment on everyone walking around with winter coats while I was in a tee shirt. Now in Dallas this summer I dread the upcoming summer but will probably grow accustomed to the heat just in time to come back to Bogota in Sept. and freeze my ass off.

I don't understand why Colombians, mostly women, will wear a jacket indoors. Put a sweater or something on. And this is in Armenia as well where it isn't cold

The rain is the problem in Bogotá, whenever there is even a shower the heat disappears from the houses and office buildings in minutes and the walls are freezing cold to the touch. The buildings here don't have insulation, the windows are single pane and hence everyone wears coats indoors.
Add to that that even in the strato 6 neighbourhoods the residents very rarely light their fires, they prefer to sit under blankets watching tv. Some think it's unhealthy to have a gas fire burning and others just won't spend the money.

Haven't got used to it in three years. Last week I was in Bogota and that was the first time in years (outside of formal occasions) that I put on some long-legged pants. OTOH, I really felt uncomfortable because of the altitude.

Since it's Canada, I'd guess it is C. Canadians are civilized people, they are using the metric system

To late billy, the French already occupy half of Eastern Canada. We are a civilized nation and our prime minister speaks fluent French. Besides most Americans hate speaking another language.
