TheBro- I knew Mitch for a brief time after he arrived in Cartagena in 2004 and can tell you some things about his life during that time. Unfortunately, most if it will not be positive. Please note that I didn't see him after 2006 or so. Mitch originally came to Colombia because he had become disillusioned with living in the Dominican Republic. He was desperately trying to sell his "mansion" (as he called it) in the DR so that he could buy a place in Cartagena (which he eventually did). He seemed pretty cool at first. He did have a decent sense of humor and liked 80s heavy metal music, as I did but he quickly struck me as one of those guys who could leave a good first impression on someone but eventually you realize how complicated, negative, and racist he was. Once you got to know him, he would often go off on rants about how horrible Canada is or in regards to anyone who had crossed him (or about any perceived slights from anyone). Mitch could really hold a grudge and could be very insulting to practically anyone (especially when he was drinking, which was nightly from what I could tell at the time). Mitch considered himself "above" anyone who had to work a normal job for a living; basically, you were inferior because you weren't as smart (fortunate) as he was. He apparently started some sort of ISP in Canada and then sold it for big bucks at a relatively young age. He struck me as extremely insecure and the only thing that made him feel special was the fact that he was relatively wealthy. As a result, he used to flaunt his wealth- buying his so-called "penthouse," buying a Porsche and constantly driving it around Boca Grande/Laguito, and generally reminding anyone who would listen that he was well off or had more money than you. Of course, this turned off most people who came into contact with him. He was such a bitter guy I eventually just avoided him altogether. A couple of quick stories about Mitch- About a year after he moved to Cartagena, he met this girl from Barranquilla who couldn't have been older than 19 or 20 and hired her to be his "asistente." I swear to God he would introduce her as this even though she lived with him in Playa Del Mar (before he started renting it out) and was clearly in a physical relationship with her. Anyway, he would always treat her like crap (almost like a slave) and it was just hard to watch. Well, fast forward 2 years later and apparently Mitch had no idea that Colombia has a 2 year "common law marriage" law and the exact DAY she moved in 2 years prior, she sued him. lol I think he ended up just giving her a payoff just to go away but I remember his pride was pretty hurt for being outsmarted by someone so "below" his status. From what I understand, most expats who were there at the time started shunning him. Mitch also had a massive liposuction during that time. He was very overweight and I guess wanted to take a short-cut to look better. The thing is after he had the surgery, he didn't bother to start exercising, or to start eating healthy, and he would continue to down a bottle of rum a night. So he quickly packed back on the pounds and then some. It was really a shame as I remember him being incredibly sore from the surgery for weeks after, only to pack the pounds right back on. I do find it ironic that Mitch wouldn't allow mongers in his Medellin hotel because pretty much the only girls he associated with in Cartagena were hookers. I can't say that I was friends with Mitch at the end but I do hope he's at peace now. You always hope that a troubled soul like Mitch will find some way to get it together and find happiness. It sounds like his body just finally gave out as he drank a lot and was overweight. I was surprised to hear about the pills in the news story. Unfortunately, there are too many expats like this around..not just Colombia , but everywhere. They make me puke. Thats just one of the reasons I left Medellin. All types hanging around Parque Lleras Juan Valdez. The NMGs and the NCGs (no class guys)

"ask some of my associates on here about my residence" ego stroke much? your example above is one that most readers here and common folk cannot relate to nor be a part of. kudos to you for being a card carrying member of colombia's elite. you sound like a real humble guy. my contact at a publicly traded private equity firm and global assets management group tells me that the investment landscape here is challenging. this is coming from a company that manages 20 billion in assets, including assets on its balance sheet and fee earning assets under management by affiliated managers, with $77 billion of total assets under management (including levered assets). 3 years in and they have passed on everything. I believe he may be a "closet NMG", I worked in Mergers and Acquisitions for most of my career and am very accustomed to dealing with people who actually have money. 99.999% had no interest in letting others know what they had. BTW, he's posted pictures of his residence on other boards and they were not very impressive other than the massive power lines than are literally on top of his porch. What really baffles me is why would anyone brag about assets when they live in Colombia- just inviting a disaster. Just my humble opinion. Not just your humble opinion..but common sense...

"people who actually have money. 99.999% had no interest in letting others know what they had" - spot on. "Yes, and who are you two wannabees, I can back up what I write. I sold my OWN NASDAQ traded company when I came to Colombia and brought my nest egg with me, what did you bring besides an appetite" - classic inferiority complex. take some of that money and find a therapist. nobody here cares how much money you have pops. "Living in some rented hovel and downtalking something you know nothing about" - quite the opposite actually and i believe my connections thwart your paltry 16 million dollar 'agricultural investment' by about 30 billion. you bragged about everything else but the product. i am betting it is palm oil or something else that has a negative impact on the environment. "I would do a littl3e investigation before shooting off your mouths" - i'm not looking for investments here, so could care less. however, i aware of boots on the ground that are investigating opportunities in colombia. they are a professional lot with global coverage and i am betting their due diligence protocol is about as high level as it gets. "I could buy and sell both of you 10 times over" - again, classic inferiority complex statement. And 83 years old and still hasn't learned humility and interpersonal skills Sorry Bill..we all feel the same way, just some of us have been "Biting Our Tongue" out of respect for your age , as another poster has mentioned.

Do I feel inferior Whodat? No actually I feel just fine.
But the recent homily from whodat reminds me of an incident from the past.
Back in the early 80's my ex and I decided to try inland boating as a pastime. Being new to such an endeavor we agreed to go to one of the Coast Guard Auxiliary boating courses together. Well, the first course was conducted by a CGReservist and during his lecture he made the mistake of fielding questions from the class. One person kept asking questions specific to his particular boat going into great detail describing it and it's capabilities to the apparent consternation of the CGReservist conducting the class not to mention the fidgeting class attendees . You could see the veiled grimaces on his face as he strived to answer every question asked buy this Commodore of the Inland Seas. That class was very off-putting to say the least. My wife and I agreed never to go back. I told her why waste time after working all day learning about what a great boat that oblivious asshat had and we had better things to do on Tuesday evenings.

Test needs to be more nuanced, and have several options of degree, instead of just yes/no answers.

Some were a bit difficult to answer. While living in other parts, Colombia included, and spending my time doing other work with a different set of people would have resulted in different answers on my part.
Rat-race 15 hour days in a basement with little contact to others, and when there is it is mostly behind a mask with ear protection, etc.on, seems to yeild interesting results. Especially when I have zero in common with them.
I'm off the next two days and will be working on my own project, some of you know about it. Although remotely it will involve real friends, my old lifestyle that I'm working on getting back. I'll retake it keeping my answers with that mindset amd see what happens.
It couldn't be worse....

I just don't know how to answer the yes and nos questions, too definitive. For example, while i am social, I have no problem not having people around, even enjoy it. Another one is do you have dificulty trusting people? No, but I always start out by not trusting and then going from there, but it gives no room for thst nuance. I will try it and see.

To be fair to Colombia, the natural landscape is spectacular in many parts of the country. And the climate is perfect, depending on your altitude.

And the climate is perfect, depending on your altitude. I agree, Colombia is the second most bio-diverse country in the world with some spectacular vistas throughout the country. And I agree with the climate - Colombia has several cities of "eternal spring", which is the perfect climate for me - Medellín, Pereira, Bucaramanga, ...
