It is amazing how many pilotless cars, trucks, trains etc. are actually in use NOW! Aviation isn't the only industry relying heavily on automation. Plenty of other areas of the transport industry are using it to cut costs and improve safety and productivity. Rio Tinto has driverless trucks and drill rigs operating at its iron ore mines in the Pilbara remotely controlled by computer jockeys 1500 kilometres away in Perth. Stevedore Patrick uses autonomous straddle carriers to move containers from trucks to ships 24 hours a day in all weather at Port Botany. In 2019, NSW plans to open the north-west rail link in Sydney as the first fully autonomous rail service in the country, although many major urban metro lines elsewhere in the world such as Singapore and France can already operate driverless. And just this week, South Australia introduced legislation allowing for tests of driverless cars on public roads, after Google's successful work in the United States.
