Well, I took a 'leap of faith' today. I officially adopted the youngest daughter. I had accomplished what normally takes 2 years in Colombia in 10 days. Courtesy of the wife's contacts and having to 'grease some palms' along the way!

NOT to sound like an Ahole but just curious as to why? Not sure if I remember right but isn't she an older child with a father in Colombia? I probably have all this wrong as I don't even remember my own family stuff. Is it for legal purposes so she can be here with mom?

No Ahole question búf. This is the youngest daughter. She is only 13. The concern was if something would happen to mom, (which we've been to the 'brink' several times already!), she would not be shipped back to a father that didn't want her from the beginning. Even though all her siblings are now here in the US, USCIS by default returns children to the biological parent. I wouldn't expect an 'Elian Gonzalez' episode, but it would have been a pretty tough fight to keep her here. This route was cheapest and the least amount of trouble. I told her after she is 18 if she wishes to change her name back she can. But for now, she will have to deal with my 'apellido.' Having done that, she has become a naturalized citizen. I just go and get her a US passport. This is another thing, whenever we visited Colombia, I had to pay off some lawyer to write a 'writ' so that she could return to the US with us. Now that she is a US citizen she can travel with me or mom and no 'writ' is needed!

And I don't think Elian Gonzalez expected an 'Elian Gonzalez' as well haha
