Security Alert: U.S. Embassy Bogota – Illegal Checkpoints in Tasajera, Magdalena
Location: Department of Magdalena
Event: The U.S. Embassy is monitoring reports of illegal checkpoints being enforced by the community ofTasajera, Magdalena.
Individuals have reportedly appearedon the Cienaga-Barranquilla Road, on the Troncal del Caribe, and at the height of the corregimiento from Tasajera, in the municipality of Pueblo Viejo, Magdalena with stones, sticks, and weaponsdemanding money from drivers and occupants of vehicles to let them pass.
According to authorities, the community is protesting their lack of utility services, but the protest is also being used by criminals to demand money from travelers to avoid damage to their vehicles. Authorities confirmed that no damage or injuries have happened, but some drivers have made the decision to pay the vandals to avoid confrontation.
