According to German media (Welt) last night, China has now 304 dead and the number of infected rose by 2580 cases in one day to a total in China to 14380 cases. Over 100.000 Chinese citizens are being examined for the virus at this moment.
A 44 year old infected Chinese man died in the Philippines (his wife is also infected) which made it the first corona virus death outside China.
The World Health Organization is strictly against prohibiting Chinese people from entering other countries (like the US, Australia) because they fear that people from China could find ways to enter foreign countries by illegal border crossings (like from Mexico to US) without being screened for the virus. That's a tough call in my opinion, you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't.
Of the more than 100 Germans flown home from Wuhan yesterday, 2 were infected with the virus, after having been screened before takeoff in Wuhan to be virus-free. A scary thought about the unpredictability of the virus.

I find it bewildering that this is the second pandemic after SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) in 2002/2003 which originated in Southern China and spread to 17 countries with about 8000 confirmed cases and almost 800 dead. No cure or prevention for SARS has ever been found in spite of ongoing research. Survivors were struck with chronic sequels (consequences of a disease) like pulmonary fibrosis and other debilitating diseases which made them unable to work or care for themselves. SARS was also caused by the same species of bats like the corona virus after blaming it initially on a small Asian wildcat, but that theory was dismissed. Will they ever learn? Maybe the Chinese government will introduce the death penalty for anyone who catches and eats bats?
Why can't they eat food like normal people, why eat cats, dogs and bats and God knows what else?

The deaths maybe close to accurate but the number with the virus is most likely grossly under-reported - I have seen estimates that there are about 10x as many infected as reported - however no a great conspiracy - for most the virus is not very severe - so it goes undetected or unreported - my daughter lives in Hong Kong and she believes the whole thing is overblown - is it an issue yes - but unless you are elderly or have respiratory issues - it most likely wont effect you much more than regular flu, they have shut her school down until March 2 - the economic effects of all this will be very real however - schools closing, factories shut down, trade suffers, Apple makes Iphones in China - what happens if they close the factory - you can't start up a supply chain for new Iphones overnight

jabbberwocky said: You are correct to state that it is dangerous to the elderly and those with low immune and respiratory strength. But the fact remains that any of these pandemics are prone to hit you like a truck and keep you 'off the field' for a minimum of a week or so. I remember getting what I was told was the Zika virus directly after a visit to Cartagena, (how many remember that one???). I felt like crap for 3 days before I pulled out of the nose dive! So to say its nothing more than the regular flu is giving it a false sense of security!

Too many people say they have the flu, when in fact they have a nasty cold.
The media needs to sell newspapers/online subscriptions. Nothing like a new/nasty virus to do that.

Then some on this site are at high risk because of their age and also I read somewhere that girls with tramp stamps were spreading the virus..

Not all Chinese victims were elderly with pre-existing respiratory ailments like COPD, even though most of them are. China reported 5 victims with ages of 36, 50 53, 55 and 58 who where of good health without heart or lung problems before they died of the virus. And there is the 44 year old Chinese man who died in the Philippines but his medical history is unknown.

If you believe the CDC..."In fact, the CDC estimates that from October 2018-May 2019, there were 37.4 million-42.9 million reported flu illnesses, and between 36,400-61,200 deaths from the flu.Oct 23, 2019"

It's true influenza kills more people every year, like 1 in every 1000 cases as an average and there are millions of flu cases worldwide, but the corona virus so far killed 2 out of every 100 cases which may still change and the SARS virus was more deadly yet, almost 10 (9.6%) out of every 100 patients died. So there must have been some improvements for treating infected patients because the cause of the virus is the same, eating wings of the fairly large Horseshoe Bat.
BTW wildstubby, the flue and associated pneumonia can be prevented by living in a warmer climate.

Latest death toll is now 362 out of 17,387 confirmed cases in 27 countries. One person I saw made a good point on the death rate. Everyone seems to be doing the same calculation of deaths/infected. But in fact you need deaths/recovered. Of those with the virus that are infected you can expect more deaths. The current death total this morning is 361 and recovered is 475. In looking at the update this morning there are a lot of critical and serious cases. I think both calculations currently are inaccurate. One low and one high. But the later when its all said and done the infected and recovered will be the same. bnonews.com/index.php/2020/02/the-latest-coronavirus-cases/Experts say Wuhan coronavirus will likely become a pandemic. us.yahoo.com/news/experts-wuhan-coronavirus-likely-become-054400720.html

My daughter has been in Hong Kong the past year and a half - before that Cambodia - she has survived life with me growing up, a year in Brazil, Army bootcamp, riots in Hong Kong and now this virus - none of this has fazed her - however if she calls me and says she is worried and wants to head back to the States - then I know its getting serious - has not done that yet.

This scourge seems to be mainly concentrated in China. First World countries should be well prepared and equipped by now to treat individual cases. In Third World countries, Latin America, Africa and in Asia however, in my opinion it is questionable what the consequences of an infected person entering would be. This vicious virus would very likely spread like wild fire and infect local health personal as well.
The Filipinos however seem to have a handle on the case with one man dead and the wife infected. The only fatality so far outside of China.

In Yokohama, Japan a cruise ship of the Carnival line lying under anchor in quarantine has 10 corona virus infected people on board caused by a passenger from Hongkong.
China had the usual increase of victims of 65 new deaths to a total of 490, all of them in the Hubei province and the number of infections climbed by 3887 to a 24324 total.
A deranged Canadian on a Westjet flight with 243 passengers on board from Canada to Jamaica stood up after two hours of the four hour flight and declared falsely that he has the corona virus while taking selfies of himself. He was given a face-mask and gloves and ordered to remain in the back of the plane. The aircraft had to return to Toronto.

A 39 year old infected patient has died in Hongkong.
If I had a daughter in Hongkong I would get her the hell out of there while it's still possible.
I have a hunch that all air traffic in and out of China and it's neighboring islands may soon come to a screeching halt to stop the virus from spreading.
