Talk about setting yourself up for the fall! I arrived late into Bogota Friday night. I was staying at a nearby hotel to catch a flight to Ibague on Saturday morning. The hotel shuttle stopped to pick me up. I gave the driver my luggage and went into the shuttle with my computer bag. When a man comes by and asks about my luggage. Being tired, I go to the rear of the shuttle to see what he is complaining about. In that short time his female accomplice takes off with my computer bag! The police saw them on camera but it was too late to respond. They had left in a taxi. Fortunately I had my wallet and passport (which are usually in my bag)! The got my password protected computer I also had my car keys and medicines in there also. I warning so that it doesn't happen to anyone else!

It's not too bad here. The weather seems agreeable. Not very hot or cold!

No. That is what the police asked. It's about 10 years old. Before they started placing GPS in them. I took it as a warning to keep my money and passport on my person and try not to let my guard down again. Pissed me off that they got my car keys and my Bose wireless earbuds.

The BOSE earbuds that cost about $125? I love those. Was pissed that the clip keeps on coming off so I super glued it

Well, I made it back home yesterday without much fanfare. When I returned to Bogota on Wed. afternoon, I stayed by the airport terminal near the police to avoid 'issues'. My girlfriend was deathly afraid that I would become the victim of a scopolamine attack. Of course I didn't think someone would try to run off with 22 Kgs of luggage. However, in retrospect, these perps, and others I am sure work the late night rounds. They count on visitors being tired and with a lack of attentiveness to carry out their plans. I found myself easily duped that late at night so I am sure it was perfect conditions for them, even with all the cameras at El Dorado!

When somebody asks me for the time I just give them a number Off the top.of my head.
I usally dont answer or giveee contact to people in the street because it is usually some bum askng for change.
I stll say the most dangerous thing in Colombia is crossing the street.
The motos willl kill your you if you let them.
Muy impudente
If you Cross at the wrong time thy will keep coming and run you down.
And its not to rob you or to kidnap hoy. Its because you are " in thier way".
I almost got creamed 3 times in Colombia because I wasnt paying attention.
See..we all.make mistakes.

If I understand correctly, you went to the rear of the shuttle but without your computer bag. How exactly did the female get hold of your computer? Did you leave it in your seat and walked away from it? We need to know what you did wrong so we can learn from your mistake.

The guy gets me to leave the shuttle bus and distract me at the rear while his accomplice, who was subtly standing in the shelter runs on to the bus and grabs the computer bag. I actually think they thought there was money in it because I just stopped at the ATM on the first floor of El Dorado and made a withdrawal.

You did good not carrying money in that bag because it is much easier to rip a bag of your shoulder or cut the strap and run off with it than taking the money away from your person. You would have felt better had you bought a magnetic key holder and hidden it under your car. Nothing like having a spare key where you need it.
But the lesson learned: In Colombia, no, in all of Latin America you need to hang on to your valuables, with both hands if possible. And just keeping an eye on it isn't good enough. People in the bus may have realized what's happening but you can't count on them to get involved, they prefer to stay out of trouble. They probably thought these two were acquaintances of yours. Thieves here work calmly, swiftly and professionally and they have tons of experience.
What make and model laptop did you lose? Just curious because I like working on them. Hopefully you have a USB external disk at home where you saved all your pictures and stuff

CB the computer was secondary. I essentially used it for reading email, surfing, skype and spanish lessons. I forgot to leave my keys at my in-laws house. But usually I would put my wallet and other loose items in there. As it turned out, my gabapentin was purchased for 30M COP without a prescription so I was ok with that!
