Interesting. I will say this, I was on a low carb diet, (Atkins) for 3 years. It certainly was easy and I had the best metabolic results from it. Unfortunately, I let my (now)ex talk me out of it in lieu of a 'different plan'. Let's just say say its a long journey at best. I do a combination circuit training and cardio workout between days. As much as I hate doing it, I always feel better once it is done!

WS...For the last 6 weeks or so I have been jogging about 5K every morning and walking around 20K steps a day. Trying to get back into my previous shape when I left Colombia 2.5 years ago. I already lost 5 kilos. I always enjoyed running. I hope to run the 1/2 marathon in Bogota this year.

Wow Scum! My hat's off to you. Half a marathon is nothing to sneeze at. I ran my first 5K race 3 years ago. I finished 4th for my age group and 256 out of a field of 625. However, since I injured my Achilles tendon in Santa Marta 2 years ago, I have been reluctant to start again. I need to lose some more weight and take the pounding off of my knees before I get back into it again!

WS-Unfortunately being in Australia now I am missing out on training at altitude. They say running the 1/2 in Bogota is almost as grueling as running a full marathon most places because of the altitude. But I will be home in a couple more weeks. My training is really just starting. I think the 1/2 is in August.
The good thing about being retired is you have time exercise and train. I couldn't have even considered something like this when I was working 10-12 hrs a day 6 days a week.

One fortunate thing about the company I work for is that they have a gym on site. Most will forego lunch and workout. For the last 5 years, I worked 12 hour swing shift and I am able to get a good 45 minutes of work out. We have 2 smith machines, a cable-crossover, various other machines for different muscle groups along with treadmills, steppers and elliptical cardio machines, (my machine of choice). Since I do the Level A HAZMAT gear, they give us plenty of leeway with our work out routines.

We used to have a really good Nordic Trak rowing machine. I used it often. But when they moved our gym, it got tossed because they got newer equipment. We have a 'seated' rowing machine. But it doesn't work the ab muscles like the older one did. That one was the closest thing to a 'sculling' type of boat. Legs, arms and abs got a good workout. I have a Nordic Trak ski machine that I use. It is a 2nd generation, all wood, ropes, straps, and spring resistance. I like using it and the elliptical type of machines since they don't tend to 'pound-the-patella'.

I love wieghts and swimming. Would swim in Rio Quindio against the current. People kept trying to tell me I wasn't getting anywhere and should swim in the opposite direction.

I did like the Atkins diet years ago when it got to be popular, but still was very irresponsible with carbs and specially on weekends at the beach with the hot sun, bikinis and lost of beer. Now years later I started ketogenic diet and this one is great. I even bought Dr. Mercola's Fat for Fuel book. It does make sense. Is not that I am overweight but diabetes is my problem. I stopped taking the Metformin once I started ketogenic. For exercise I do the old ski machine using the 30-20-10 which is just moving along at 30 seconds then increasing the speed for 20 seconds and then go like hell for 10 seconds. scumbuster , I loved jogging all my life until I hurt my knee. Now with a steel knee I can't run, jump or kneel any longer. I loved running at the beach also but those days are now gone. But enjoy it while you can, it was my fav sport for many years.

papitohead, I have one of those original NordicTrak ski machines that I use when I am at home (bought at a yard sale for $15!). I'm sort of like you with the routine. I listen to music while on the machine. When the 2nd song starts, I go 'balls-to-the-walls' for 2 minutes, I'll do that every other song for about 25 minutes. Helluva workout!

That is right, great workout. I wish I could run again, but too late in life. I did my share for so many years. Here is another option but I hate going to gyms.

Very interesting papitohead . Interestingly enough, I do most of those exercises that he does. It is what I call circuit training. Its not so much the weight or reps, but time. Weight lifting is done for a minute at a time with light weights with very little resting in between exercises. Granted, I will use a Smith machine to prevent me from losing my balance when doing squats (90lbs) or sitting military press, (65lbs). It doesn't sound like much, but when you get to the last 10~15 seconds, you are really struggling! Another difference is he uses the machine to do what I call a 'Roman Situp' I prefer to use a large ball and instead of sitting up,(which you ultimately do in the exercise) you lay all the way back. Stretching all of your 'core muscles' while maintaining support on your spine! Most of the 'muscleheads' at work that I talked to (some lift professionally), they all say to do your stretching exercises last. I finish with the aforementioned back stretch, a 2-minute 6"leglift,a 2-minute plank ending with 10 'propeller twists'.
