You know how sometimes it feels like you and your family just don’t get along? Well, one grandma had a very expensive way of expressing that feeling. The 85-year-old shredded €950,000 (£680,000) to stop her family inheriting her fortune. Madness. Isn’t this normally the circumstance in which you leave it all to a cat or a charity? Well, apparently not, and the family are said to be devastated after seeing all of her banknotes and books cut up into tiny pieces on her bed. It’s not over until it’s over, though, and the family may well have the last laugh as the country’s central bank have pledged to replace the destroyed cash so long as they can prove its origin. Friedrich Hammerschmidt, deputy head of the OeNB cashier division said: “If the heirs can only find shreds of money and if the origin of the money is assured, then of course it can all be replaced. If we didn’t pay out the money then we would be punishing the wrong people.” You never know, the deceased grandma may be happy that they could still get paid out. Shredding that €950,000 could have just been one giant accident. Is anyone else wondering what it was they did for her to do this?
