Was told that the Guatape area was bad to visit during weekends because the long line of traffic getting in or getting out. I spent two weeks there and I never saw three cars in a row come to town within one minute, same as leaving town. Buses leave every hour of the day to Medellin and usually if you get there 15 minutes before departure, you will have any seat you want.
On the other hand, the place is just beautiful. Both my wife and I loved the place. No crime what so ever there. Friendly people and everything is real cheap.
I highly recommend El Retorno restaurant. Just out of town and any mototaxi will take you there for 4k pesos. Real thick NY strip steak on 8, 10, or 12 ounces about 1/2 to 3/4 inches thick. I had the 10 oz with all the treamings for just 30k pesos. I was told that local town restaurant owners often visit this restaurant. Is owned and operated by BJ who is a Puerto Rican living in Guatape for the last 10 years.

The ride to Guatape is very pleasant... especially if you don't get caught behind a bus or truck. Guatape is about an hour from where I live, and I enjoy taking visitors (friends and family) up there to see the sights. Thanks, for the tip on El Retorno Restaurant. We'll give it a try.

The road to Medellin will soon be widened to doble calzada. So two lanes each way will greatly help if any buses or trucks.

Was there 6 months ago and loved it. We ate at some non-descript small family restaurant on the main drag, and the food was awesome. So was the service and price.
