An American of Colombian origin was detained at the Medellin Rionegro airport with 58,500 dollars, of which $9,600 USD was in his stomach, and $48,900 were hidden in his luggage, police said.
The Anti-Narcotics Police Directorate at Rionegro airport reported in a statement that the capture of the man, whose identity was kept confidential, was achieved by the "expertise of the uniformed."
The 49-year-old man was a dual citizen from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA, and was attempting to enter Colombia, "illegally with $48,900 hidden in a guitar amp that was checked baggage."
Investigators at the Anti-Narcotics Bureau identified "that his answers were inconsistent with the questions put to him, because such a situation was sent to the X-ray room, and it was found that the captured had foreign objects in his digestive tract, "the statement added.
The man said he had "ingested 15 latex packet with money, so he was sent immediately to a hospital because he had abdominal pain.
The police explained that because of the "gastric juices these latex packets were quickly destroyed and the bills were loose in his digestive system, creating risk for life."
The detainee underwent a surgical procedure, in which the doctors managed to extract from the stomach about nine thousand 600 dollars, according to the Anti-Narcotics Police.
The authorities indicated that although this method of concealment is complex to be detected, the narcotics authorities managed to identify it.
"The National Police, in the research processes that have been developing, has identified that these criminal networks that are dedicated to doing money laundering to reinvent in the business of drug trafficking and send drugs in the same modality of ingested items," he commented.

Duh, just put the $9,600 in your carry-on instead of your stomach and declare it as you are permitted to bring $10,000 into Colombia and fly Avianca and connect in Bogotá before coming to Medellín and your checked bags are routed directly to Medellín domestic baggage claim and aren't even routed through customs in Bogotá.
