The world's 10 best cities to visit in the summer Sydney, Australia Cartagena, Colombia "It's always summer in Cartagena. This beautiful walled city, a former Caribbean pirate base turned South American holiday favourite, has good weather year-round, with average high temperatures ranging from 31 degrees to 32 degrees the entire 12 months. That's great news for tourists, who can swim in the sea, and hang out drinking cocktails at open-air bars on the city walls, and stroll the cobbled streets and enjoy a city at play at any time of the year." Great to see Cartagena gets a mention. Other cities in the list... Queenstown, New Zealand, Barcelona, Spain, Cape Town, South Africa, Moscow, Russia, Perth, Australia, Essaouria, Morocco, Vancouver, Canada, Reykjavik, Iceland, Read more: www.traveller.com.au/the-10-best-cities-to-visit-in-the-summer-gtfkat#ixzz4TW2JGI00

I don't know how Perth made the list. I was there many years ago (before global warming jajaja) in summer and there was 5 days in a row that the temperature was over 40 deg.C
It was that hot that the roads were melting.
Sydney can also get very hot in summer.
For me, the best places to visit in summer are the places that have snow in the winter e.g. New Zealand. I couldn't handle living on the coast in Colombia.

I don't understand why people make comments that reflect a stereotypical view of Colombia. Cartagena is a beautiful city...and Colombia is an amazing country. It would seem to me that people have come to this forum because they have a love of this country and therefore have chosen to live here or plan on living here as soon as they can. Anytime that there is good "press" about any part of this country, we should be celebrating it - raising our arms in happiness - and not throwing stones that someome must have (by implication) stuffed something up his/her nose and that is the only possible reason why he/she would praise this country or its cities
I am tired of people throwing stones from afar. I chose this country. If you chose this country too, then celebrate it If you chose it and don't like it here, then go back where you came from. But remember - there must have been a reason why you left in the first place. If you haven't chosen Colombia, then how can you possibly make any comments ?
Ok...I know that I am going to get "flamed" for this post....

Bloggers write these lists and surveys from the comfort of their own living room. They make money selling blogs to travel websites who in turn make money from advertising. Ever since the film "Romancing the Stone" every blogger and travel writer in the world knows that Cartagena is "The Jewel of Colombia". www.google.com.au/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=cartagena%20the%20jewelDon't believe any of it. Go there yourself. Live there and find out the truth. Those of us that have spent a lot of time in Colombia are under no illusion. It may be an amazing place but it is far from perfect............. and far from one of the best places in the world to visit in summer.

I have to agree with you barrumundi. To say claim the weather is perfect year round is just absolutely a lie. The torrential rains during the 'late season' make it more than a desirable place, (especially when you have a 1.5 feet of water in the streets!).

Well the Walled City is nice, but actually a misnomer It should be called the "Double Walled City" because it has the physical wall and a wall of under aged prostitutes protecting the city. The beaches are ugly and dirty as is most of the rest of the city. There are many good things about Colombia, but there is no need to fantasize and pretend it is something its not. And speaking of "Flaming" , there is no shortage of that in Cartagena. Colombia is like anywhere else-there is both good and bad- there is no need to over hype it to justify your decision to live here.

Every place has problems. I lived in the old city for a few years and loved my time living there. It really comes alive in the evening.

Cartagena always sparks a good debate on Colombian forums I love it. Great restaurants, historic old city, lively beaches, lot's of Colombians on holiday - so good party atmosphere, good bars and nightclubs, good kayaking slightly outside town and white sand beaches also slightly outside town. I see Vancouver made the list. I never feel the need to leave during the summer that's for sure.

Yes a healthy debate is so refreshing and the corresponding opinions are...well just that. I personally have had my fill with Cartagena but I would whole heartily recommend it for new visitors equally I feel the same way about Bogota. Canada is a wonderful place regardless of which season you visit there's always some great outdoor activities to participate in.

I found Cartagena interesting - only been there once so no way to know how it would be to live there - me perception was that - the old city and close by was nice, but did not look like there was much of a middle class area - eith poor or rich areas - no Envigado type neighborhood - of course I did not see all of the city - but it seemed somewhat small. Being a sailor I did like the marine facilities - tough to find that in Medellin, someday I will get to Santa Marta to see how it compares to Cartagena.

jabberwocky said: A swabbie after my heart!!! It was the first city I visited in Colombia. The view is still fresh in my mind. It was also the first place I had my heart broken in Colombia also! I didn't visit the city heart like I did in Medellin, (and Santa Marta). I may return. One thing I did like about it was when you board and unboard the plane, they let you do it from the front and back of the aircraft so you aren't sweltering in a hot plane for any length of time. I would like to return to visit Barrú. I understand that is the ultimate beach. Whether there are vendors there like in Bocagrande, I don't know but I would like to see this gem for myself. Save your money as far as Santa Marta is concerned. I thought it was rather dumpy and dirty. The inner city had its 'Parque de Novios' but that was the only bright spot. The police chased you out of the water at 6PM and I didn't enjoy any nitelife to speak of, (of course my foot was injured so there is some bias).

Storm water is a problem in many old towns because they never thought to install any drainage system and now it is impossible because everything is too built up.
Most modern towns and cities in the world have a separate sewer (black water) system and an independant storm water drain system......... but not so in much of Colombia.
In my small town there is a problem that storm water run-off gets into the sewer system and floods it to the point that the sewerage bubbles up through the broken manhole covers and runs down the road until it enters the local rivers and streams. Not a healthy situation. Ducks and geese are swimming with blind mullet.

As Jabberwocky said, it is an interesting city. Good place to visit, not sure I could live there. One day I had the stupid idea to take a walk on the beach. The vendors were insufferable. And I imagine that climate could take years off your life.

Use it as a stopping off point for Parque Tayrona. You'll see some nice beaches there.

Bocagrande Castilo Grande and El Laguito are actually sinking. Yes! Sinking. Centro (old city) is not as bad as the above mentioned barrios. There are streets in centro that will flood for a few hours after a heavy downpour. The deepest I ever saw it was about 10 cm in centro. Of course many of the other barrios flood as well. They call Santa Marta the poor mans Cartagena.
