We upgraded a couple of TV's here and thinking of sending the older 32 inch TV's to family in Medellin, used to be TV's were expensive in Colombia with the dollar at 3,000 pesos not sure what the price is.
What does a new - 32 inch smart TV cost? Middle of the road nothing fancy.
We have sent one before - it cost about $40 to send.

We have sent one before - it cost about $40 to send. That's pretty darn cheap. Can you share the name of your shipper? Also, are the any customs due? I had thought that if you sent TV's or appliances that you had to pay duty on them.

Check the sales at Exito, Alkomprar and Jumbo - you can usually find several TVs on sale.
You should be able to find a few 32 inch on sale for less than $200 USD.

I guess they dont put much VAT on TVS. They consider them "essential". What about stereo systems, etc. ? I might be going from a furnished place to an unfurnished place and buy furniture. Breaking my principles to rent, not buy in Colombia

Whatever you do , dont let them suck you into buying a new TV for them Just send the old TV. I know how he psycology of these peol work.."Only 400 mil peseos more for a new one, why send a used one?" Before you know it they will have you buying a big screen TV with all the gadgetry.

Breaking my principles to rent, not buy in Colombia TV prices have dropped substantially in Colombia compared to 6+ years ago. When they are on sale you can sometimes find them for a similar price as in the US. I remember when I used to see Colombians in Miami checking new TVs in boxes all the time when flying home to Colombia, which I don't see anymore. But I have now seen that when traveling to Brazil from Colombia - TVs in Colombia are substantially cheaper than in Brazil - they are about half the price in Colombia compared to in Brazil. Technology products in Brazil are crazy expensive. So Brazilians can buy technology products so much cheaper in Colombia than in Brazil. I started out renting furnished in Medellín over six years ago but after four months decided to rent unfurnished. I figure my break even point was about 9 months when factoring in the cost to buy furnishings compared to continuing renting furnished.

Most of the 32 inch TVs on sale here are marked as HDTV ready, which is of course nonsense as they only offer 720 pixel vertical resolution. Move up to 40 inch models and there are some good high-resolution models but in a much higher price bracket.
The extra money for a "Smart TV" is still a dubious choice. Almost all use the Android Jelly Bean or KitKat system which was being offered on Smartphones nearly 4 years ago and is totally obsolete today. They are all crippled with slow processors and minimal memory size and have very limited expansion facilities. A few offer an application to turn your Smartphone into a remote control, otherwise you are lumbered with the clumsy standard TV remote controller.

I've sent two different smart TV's to Colombia in the last 4-5 years or so. In both cases, I was able to find hellacious deals in the USA on 46+ TV's that Colombia couldn't possibly match. Cant remember how much it cost...maybe 100 bucks? 150? The thing to consider is a TV is somewhat fragile and you are taking a small risk it might be damaged in the shipping. One of my TV's developed a permanent line on the screen that I always wondered if it happened in transit.
