I dont know how you can consider a two hour siesta to be backwards - the Spanish have been doing that for centuries and it fits in well with hot climates.
I would say that a "non-traditional" society is much to be preferred than a pretend puritan society that sweeps everything under the table and pretends it does not happen.
You may care to recall that in the 1980s, Canada with all its tolerance of ethnic minorities was a world leader in "my gay lover-bashing".

"The above are examples. Some things would be considered "good" cultural policy by an average (but not extreme) "liberal" thinker, and others obviously would be considered undisireable or repugnant by the average individual from a more developed country."
This recent event of the young girl's rape and murder has become the centre of attention for much of Colombia. Many people are following the news more closely than they do their favourite novellas ........and I can't help thinking it is because the general populace is feeling outrage at the fact that a rich person abused and killed a poor person.
In the poor barrios and in the smaller towns there are thousands of poor young girls that are abused and even killed on a daily basis, yet it doesn't even rate a mention in the media because the perpetrator was also a poor person.

You may care to recall that in the 1980s, Canada with all its tolerance of ethnic minorities was a world leader in "my gay lover-bashing". Manizales isnt a hot climate as you know. Houston is a lot hotter, and they dont take "Siestas". The idea of doing your personal business on line, or if you absolutely have to go to a Travel Agency, Bank or Government agency, during lunch hours, is people dont take time off work, and thus productivity increases. Productivity increases, wages eventually increase. Risin tide raises all boats. This type of mentality is one of the reasons Countries colonized by the British do so much better economically and socially than the Spanish colonized ones. I just psaid for my health care with Coomeva. I had to pay an invoice from the Local office, and had to pay it at the "Bank". The "Bank" wouldnt accept credit card payment (Even though They did last year through some type of cock-eyed arrangement- me running back and forth between the "office" and the"Bank"). I had to take 3 million pesos out of the ATM to pay the invoice . Running arond with Cash in my pocket. The Colombians do this crap all the time. No wonder they get robbed. Thats pretty backwards- I dont think anyone can deny it. OK.. its not as bad as Argentina , where you have trouble even finding an ATM that takes foreign credit cards, or of course Venezuela-but still, pretty backwards. Manizales, being a small provincial town, is worse than the bigger cities. Ohhand about the Gay Bashing-..only reason it seemed like Canada had more than other countries is most places in the world didnt (and still dont) even report that sort of thing...Canadas libera press press has always liked to over report, obsess, and concentrate on these kind of things to give your average law abiding straight white male some type of complex. Of course, no way I am remotely condoning this type of horrible disgusting behavior. Just pointing out that Canada , as the most PC country in the world, has an extreme and over-blown culture of "Guilt"
