Last year a friend of mine told a similar story-his girl got robbed and was too upset to go out that night. He eventually found out she had another date that night-be careful of these Paisa girls-welcome to Medellin Jan through Dec.

Dont have to tell Mudd that.your preaching to the choir-..hes been there and done that a hundred times.. Like we all have..
he is a many, many years experienced Medellin expat He actually has very sophisticated ways to find out if she is lieing (we are talking Secret Service level here)..
But in reality, these girls do get robbed a lot..its not usually a scam to get money off of you or to avoid visiting you so they can foch their Barrio Boy.. I would say that at least 70% of the time it is true, because these girls are suposed to have street smarts, but are all bobas..they do stupid things,we wouldnt do, like walk around with their purses late at night in the dark part of the shopping mall where there are no people. Or get money from a cajero in a remote location outside the cc because they are too lazy to wait in a fila inside the mall.
In the end it doesnt really matter. The girls are either cheating , scammers or just plain bobas with no common sense. Thats why I believe vast majority of Colombianas (espescialy Paisas and Caleñas)are not marraige material. Good for sex and partying, travel partners, have fun. Good for a good time , not a longtime.
Now if you look at ones over 40 may be different, but from what I have seen from what guys post here, I kinda doubt it.

If my calculations are correct she should be asking for a little monetary help this week given her unfortunate loss.

elexpat - a bit harsh on the women - but I guess it depends on where one is trolling for GF's - if one is substantially older than the mujer your chances of finding a non gold digger type are greatly diminished - not that it can't happen , just tougher odds.
Women in their later 30's and early forties - I would guess that about 60% are single ( at least the ones I know) lots of very nice hard working sexy Paisas fall in this age group - the one big drawback to many gringos - they come with a family - hijos, mother. If you are just dating then not such a big deal - but longer term relationships - you better know what you are getting into. My wife came with 3 daughters ( and now a granddaughter) but that was fine with me , I like kids (for the most part) and I consider 2 of the 3 as my children. They were 11 , 13 and 16 when we met - now 6 years older-( mine were 18 and 14 so older and one was already off to college). But if I had been a bit older at the time and her kids a bit younger - I don't think I would have gone down that road - as most know, relying on the Colombian father for financial support is a fool's mission - there comes a point in life where you get beyond wanting to deal with pre-teen kids.
Its a bit funny - having two of my own - always sorted regretted not having a third - be careful what you wish for - ended up with 3 more.
Just as a comparison - my wife who lived in Medellin for 30 years - was robbed twice - once by a kid on a bike and once had her purse stolen at the Festival de Flores, both before I met her. Of course since we are married she does not have to make up any elaborate stories to get money - she just says - " hey amor, I am talking $40"

My neighbors son (lived in Medellin) was driving past Premium Plaza and evidently was slowed or stopped by traffic. I guy in a Moto pulled up next to him and shot him 4 times thru the window (eye witnesses'). To this day his parents (my wife's best friend here) doesn't have a clue why. He was not into dope or criminal activity his parents knew about had a regular good job with a large company.. Wife and 2 small kids now without a Papa.

Recent incidents on the news and the postings here have made me somewhat more cautious when I head out.
Now, I've been frequenting only places I'm familiar with. I don't wear my head on a swivel except when it comes to navigating the street.
Too easy to get hit if you're not paying enough attention.
I used to think that if something bad happened to me here, there would be a reason for it, like robbery, vengeance, an unpaid debt, but something that would justify what happened. After several senseless acts of violence here, like what commonly now goes on in the States, I don't think that anymore, it's just too easy to be victim, period.

As far as witnesses, the criminals seem to have little fear of being seen committing crimes in front of a large audience. Did he purchase the car he was driving used? You must be very careful purchasing a used car since the tag follows the car-and if the previous owner was a less than desirable person his problems could become your problems.

There is no rime or reason for crime in Colombia, there is a good possibility they recover something from the victim if he appears to be gringo, they may hate gringos if they have family in FARC or ELN, they may be brainless thugs who enjoy robbing and killing, they may be former members of a guerilla movement who have access to a gun and know how o use it and make a living robbing people, they may have lost a gf to a gringo at one time or are envious of his lifestyle in Colombia. This particular case seems to be drug- or gang related. Of course his parents wouldn't know any of that, kids don't tell their parents anything these days.

problem in medellin, you just never know, i would say most street crime is wrong place at wrong time, unless you look like an easy target or a walking wallet. the other crime, that is mostly because your doing something you shouldn't be doing, drugs, money laundering, narco friends, young girls, or wrong girls, stepped on somebody's toes ect.
