Bogota to close restaurants near top tourism spot Monserrate Restaurants around Bogota’s Monserrate church, one of the Colombian capital’s main tourist attractions, will be closed permanently following a ruling by the Bogota Justice Council, local media reported Wednesday. According to the ruling, there can be no commercial activity on the upper part of the hills leading to Monserrate, Bogota’s top tourist attraction and a Catholic pilgrimage destination, due to the area’s status as a protected forest reserve zone. Only activities related to ecological issues, provision of public services and research will be allowed, reported Bogota newspaper El Tiempo. The decision affects several restaurants, the Monserrate coffee shop, artisan kiosks, as well as the over 40 craftsmen working in the tourist zone, that will have to end their commercial activities in the area around the church. colombiareports.com/bogota-close-restaurants-near-top-tourism-spot-monserrate/

Now that is just plain stupid! What's next, Medellin closing down all the shops and artisans there in Nutibara Park?

If the church could get more kickbacks / payments (however one wants to say it) --from the vendors etc--- this would never have been an issue to begin with---

Well it's a religious shrine;you only need to visit Jerico to see what happens when a town has a saint. There are Madre Laura souvenirs everywhere,it doesn't help that most of it is made in China.

I agree gallito , but when your unemployment rate is extremely high, it defies convention to go out of your way to close more businesses and put more people on the street!! As my mother would say, "You're cutting off your nose to spite your face!!!!"

I wonder if this will affect the ladrones that hide in the bushes on the walking path?
