I love the drive, but get behind a flat bed truck, and it can be hell on that long and winding road. Being able to get from Point A to Point B quickly will help Colombia grow its budding tourist industry. My wife and I just came back from a week in Cancun/Playa del Carmen, and the wonderful highway (not to mention the flat terrain) help tourists "connect the dots" quickly and efficiently. My wife and I were reflecting on this today as we descended... then ascended Loma Escobero after visiting friends and family in Envigado.

We drive the Guatape to Maranilla road often, and Vago is right, getting behind a slow mover is a PITA. But it's a fun drive if you have a good handling car with decent power.

Have only driven it once - and it was in a Twingo - so not much fun - just lots of curves and a lot of shifting

It will certainly make a positive difference and open the area to more tourism and residential development. The last time we tried to go to Guatape we got stuck in extremely slow-moving traffic. After spending at least two hours on the road between Maranilla and Peñol we gave up and turned around. That was about a year ago, and we haven't tried since. I've enjoyed visiting Guatape and would consider taking some short vacations there, but the traffic issue gives me pause.
I wonder though, if there are any plans for improving traffic in Peñol. Right now, getting through Peñol isn't too bad because the narrow road meters traffic into the town. But, I wonder if they are just moving the bottleneck.

Two trips to Guatape and once you got behind a slow mover, it took considerably longer.
On the first trip back an accident tied us up for well over an hour in the rain. A nice road would be a great improvement.
