Not comparing Subway to a hoagie from Philly - but they seem to be expanding and doing well in Colombia, I like their cookies - their subs pretty much suck. Yes, the ubiquitous Subway brand seems to be doing well in Colombia (as well as the rest of the world). Maybe consumers feel more secure (or accepted) with the big brand names. Small Mom & Pop operations that serve foreign-style cuisine seem to struggle in cities like in Medellin.

My personal theory about why some Colombian restaurants fail and frachise type operations succeed is lack of consistency. I have lost count of how many times I have found what seems to be a good restaurant with nice food and reasonable prices yet after a few visits the quality suddenly changes. New cook? Trying to economise on the ingredients? Who knows ........but something changes ......... then I don't go back. With the big name franchise restaurants the food tastes the same every day........... which may or may not be a good thing except you always get what you were expecting.
