The connection between the Valley of Aburrá and el Oriente is closed today due to a landslide on the main road connecting the Medellín to Jose Maria Cordova Airport. Felipe Villegas, Secretary (e) Mobility Envigado, said the incident occurred at 12:45 am, and indicated that the route, in both directions, possibly all day is closed. Because of the weather conditions, there is a risk of another landslide, so relief agencies are already working and taking the necessary precautions." The Administrative Department of Prevention, Care and Disaster Recovery (Dapard) indicated that for the moment no injuries were reported. The National Roads Institute confirmed that the landslide occurred at kilometer 5 + 500. Villegas also reported that the volume of earth that fell was about 2,000 cubic meters, and recommended taking alter routes to the East, as the Escobero, or through the municipalities of El Retiro and La Ceja. Recently I headed to the airport very early in the morning and there was a huge tree that had fallen completely blocking the road to the airport near the airport. The taxi driver had to find an alternate roundabout route through some fincas to get to the airport and I nearly missed my flight.

We got diverted going to visit towns near the airport; on the way back we were told the road would be back open tomorrow, and they did seem to let a taxi through, although it could have been going to somewhere before the landslide.

I know they were having a drought down there in Colombia but I guess they are getting their balance of water all in one shot! I was in Cartagena last year when I watched the streets fill up with water from a storm. We (the US) are merely pikers when it comes to a 'downpour' here compared to the amount of rain they get in Colombia!!!
