Travel guide Lonely Planet ranked Colombia second in its list of best countries to visit in 2017. According to the Lonely Planet website, “there are no world wonders, but the country’s mix of vibrant culture, nature and hospitality is a rich tapestry woven by welcoming arms.” The only country topping Colombia is Canada because of the North Americans’ “dynamic cities that dominate global livability indices and a reputation for inclusiveness and impeccable politeness.” Lonely Planet is the world’s largest travel guide with more than 200 authors contributing to its ever-growing index of places to stay and things to do. The travel guide tipped Colombia as the third best destination in 2010, making this year’s endorsement Colombia’s most significant ever. See: colombiareports.com/colombia-2nd-best-country-visit-2017-lonely-planet/Just don't buy the Lonely Planet Colombia guide book, which is chock full of errors and missing many of the best places in Colombia.

Lonely planet is a business as any business-- they promote their own wares--
Wonder how many tourists actually make a return to this paradise with a "minus" road infrastructure-- (Not counting the moto backpackers on a 40,000 pesos a day budget) 90% of rural small towns like Mexico with open air meat markets--and the sorry roads to get there-- Restaurants with very well done tasteless beef which requires an axe to cut
Cartegena--get off the cruise ship for a day--then eat in overpriced restaurants
Canada---1st world --of the French and English----why just historical all for one--one for all love birds in a homogeneous society with open border and cultural diversity to all-----that is until they are overrun--with non English--French--Europeans
In Bogota one visits Monserrate--the Gold Museum---Candelaria-- and that is about it---
People visiting Colombia--takes an hour from the airport downtown depending on the traffic
I would take the U.K. Scotland with their 1st world / class transportation infrastructure--endless history which made the world-- historical museums--etc--with the same culture and language I grew up in---
Colombia--I could leave tomorrow permanently and never return --take my losses and still afford to do so-- Probably leave my wife there too !!!!
Africa--a must see for those in to thatched roofed architecture and construction-- cattle grazing among the lions-- farming of organic foods--beautiful animals to observe--that is until one gets too close--and now becomes part of their food chain
Ah yes--the Lonely Planet to direct us lost souls of the world to a better place--

I have talked with a lot of first time tourists to Colombia - all have positive things to say. I agree with the article - Colombia does not a have one big wow factor - hard to point to one thing that would be worth the trip by itself - its more of a general overall impression that is positive. Medellin is not what I call a tourist city - no great architecture, museums, not really known as a fine dining destination, no real 5 star hotels. But I think it gives a positive vibe to visitors - the city is clean compared to a lot of other cities in Latin America - pretty easy to get around using the metro or taxi's - the locals are friendly - lots of things to do within 2 or 3 hours of the city, prices are cheap compared to other big cities - I think many tourists feel they have had a real Colombian experience after visiting Medellin, does not have that made up feeling one gets in a more touristy city.

Any positive news is good news for Colombia. Colombia has it's own brand of tourism, unique and distinct as the country and culture are.

Yeah..Canadian cities are nice place to live if you can afford the high rent, low wages, high cost of living, snow 6 months of the year , "liberated" women, extreme political correctness.
But on the other hand , where in Colombia can you bike or run, safely, without ladrones or dogs molesting you, without inhaling deadly diesel fumes and unburned hydrocarbon particulates, 24 or 30 KM in a beautiful treed greenbelt, without litter, and beautiful vistas, only having to cross street lights once or twice in the entire route?

I could leave tomorrow, if I had too, because of political, security or legal reasons, because I am happy anywhere, could live anywhere I wanted in the world, and am happy in my own skin. Happiness is within. As longas you have health life is great.

I was lucky enough to spend 6 weeks in South Africa. One week staying at www.tripadvisor.com.au/Hotel_Review-g471848-d471919-Reviews-Inyati_Game_Lodge-Inyati_Private_Game_Reserve_Sabi_Sand_Game_Reserve_Kruger_National_Pa.htmlI like Europe/England also and parts of the US. Especially Hawaii. For me nothing beats Australia.

ozgringo said: I liked the Bocagrande section personally. Up away from the docks. The only problem is the local vendors will bug the h3ll out of you while you are on the beach, (but if you are in the water it is not a problem). The food at some of the little shacks are pretty good also. Barru(?)I understand is pretty beautiful but it has been getting trashed lately. The local government is stiffening the tolls there to try and cut down on the garbage. Santa Marta beaches, (El Rodadero) is nice but the cops chase you out of the water at about 6:30! I personally thought the city proper was a sh!thole. But it does have some nice places to eat near the 'Parque de Novios'. I wanted to go to Tyrona but injured my Achilles tendon and I couldn't walk the mile from the road to the beach!

Take this with a grain of salt as the headline says: Colombia is no. 85 on the list of places NOT to visit, direct contradiction? The Most Dangerous Countries to Travel to, Colombia #85
