I understand it has been proposed but not passed yet - seems an awfully big jump % wise for one year.

I like the way it's referred to as tax reform when it's just basic tax increases.

The government needs money ....there is no doubt about that. Hardly anyone Colombian pays income tax and the money has to come from somewhere. All Colombians rich or poor, need to eat so the answer is increase the IVA.

Even with that increase, I will still survive on my meager retirement income.

They have proposed lowering when you start paying income tax to $2.7 million COP per month.

The only thing about taxes like this is that politicians find a way to spend more money than they take in regardless if you are in America or Zimbabwe!

Wonder how much is not collected - we frequently have been in a store , that's maybe in el Hueco or Itagui, if you pay with a credit card will have to charge you the IVA - cash - no IVA - I assume this happens a lot.

Not charging IVA is the "discount."

Many stores in Colombia have the IVA% already in the price. How many times have you asked for a receipt at a local hardware or Tienda and the total was the same but showed the IVA.

IVA at 19% in Colombia? That sounds as a good move.
