Since there was another thread - thought I would follow up with this:
The wife is always talking about wanting to go to San Andres - we live in Florida - so that means we have to fly to Colombia and then to San Andres - which is much closer to Nicaragua - while I am sure it is a nice place - I try to tell her much easier to go at the US Virgin Islands ( I like St Thomas and St John) - direct flight from Florida, part of US so no immigration issues, the Bahamas also - much closer - ( not sure of the Colombian visa issue there though).
My question - does San Andres have more to offer than the Virgins or Bahamas?

I wouldn't waste my time, the Virgen Islands and Bahamas are far and away better options.

San Andres has almost nothing to offer. The accommodation and food are lousy and worse. The entire island looks like there was a war and no one bothered to repair it afterward.
And they want to protect it, sheesh. Protect it from what, itself?
I went there once and I want back my time!

San Andres is a pretty boring place without much to do. Some beaches and boats and water activities but not much shopping, restaurants, nightlife and things to do. I agree with doodaddaddy that the food and accommodations there are lousy.
San Andres only has a population of less than 70,000. I went several years ago and was quickly bored. There is much more to do in the Bahamas and Virgin Islands and much better food and accommodations in my experience.

Over-rated. Too many crowds, (Colombians) accommodations not that great. And only a few coral reefs-Johnny Kaye overcrowded and small
Even if you are in Colombia, Providencia, Capurgana, Tayrona and some o the Islands off of Cartagena are better options

Visited San Andres for the first time in 2013. My wife organized a party of 10 which made the trip fun. However, I was not impressed with the beaches or our all-inclusive accommodations. But for 600K pesos each (including plane ticket), I can't complain too much. The heavy-duty tourist district is in the northeast of the island. If you like to shop, San Andres is known for its duty free stores. The southern part of the island is less "Coney Islandish", less crowded and more laid back. B&B & cabin-type accommodations are available, and the beaches are much nicer than the main tourist area. I'm told Providencia Island is the place to be if you like a more pristine environment. For me, my favorite perennial beach destination is Santa Marta.
