Haha - his ex -mother in law is not too keen on him ( her quote at end of article) hope they let him enjoy his jail time in Colombia for a long time. Don't quite get the advertising though - gringos will enjoy a hot young Colombiana kissing them in public ( after paying them) - ? how does this build up one's manhood if you paid the girl? A bit like cheating at golf - whats the point?

Let him rot. It would also be good to see the same amount of publicity whenever it's a Colombian involved in this type of thing.

I have no use for this misfit but the article is bogus also. It is 100% allegations but no convictions and half is "here say", so from a legal standpoint it's practically useless. The charges they are holding him on are minor.

On the outside this ex baseball star was playing pitcher, in his new accommodations he has most certainly been transitioned to catcher-maybe not so minor!!!

There seems to be a crackdown of sorts on sex tourism. Targeting high profile people like Colombian Jake and Cuba Dave. Surely if the countries can put them away for years, the subsequent news on their fate will discourage a lot of people from getting involved in it. Here's another guy, a softball player, also from Florida, who got himself in trouble by creating travel advice and such for gringos for various places where prostitution is legal. He was active in Costa Rica, and when he went to return to the States Sept 4 a year ago, he got nabbed at the airport and has been in prison ever since, waiting for a trial, supposedly this November. Recently he was offered 12 years in prison in lieu of trial, but he decided to take the trial by a panel of three judges. The charge, promoting sex tourism, under a new law in Costa Rica. Anyway, here's the story of Cuba Dave. www.vice.com/read/the-cautionary-tale-of-cuba-dave

About 2 years ago flew back to FLL on Spirit, another flight from CR was in at same time, single guy ahead of me in immigration was coming in from CR, he got pulled aside and was asked questions about why he was traveling to CR so much, gave them some answer that sounded like BS to me, from the pic , it's the same guy, they were on to him several years ago. Medellin flights used to have mostly Colombians with s mix of single gringo dudes, mostly 40's and up, not so much anymore , all ages, lots of young twenty somethings, couples and families.

You can't put the genie back in the bottle , unless Medellin becomes unsafe again , in tourists eyes, more tourists
Hopefully I won't wake up some day and find my new neighbor in Envigado is from Jersey, then I will know Colombia has turned into Costa Rica

This Colombian Jake guy was an example of the worst form of expat and frankly I would prefer to live next to your average Joe from Jersey than to be in Jakes vicinity. But yes, Colombia needs an image change, and right now all the world reads is how the people have rejected peace - sad.

Tourism is a big plus for Colombia just don't want it to see what I have seen in CR and Panama, ex-pat enclaves where they don't mix with locals other than hiring them for help.

The sex tourism angle is seedy nevertheless Colombia attracts all sorts of dodgy enterprises. The peace process rejection did more harm than good;Colombia needs to move forward and lead by example, otherwise it risks being left behind.

I tend to agree mixing with locals;they know a lot more about their country than most expats. At times it can seem like a clash of cultures, keeping an open mind is important.

This non mixing culture is not just on the part of the expats though, can't speak for Panama but in Colombia there is a certain element that doesn't want foreigners here, it's apparent on this board at times - and understandable.
It's also against human nature to completely assimilate into foreign cultures, we are all tribal in one way or another and here in Colombia there exists far less trust than in most other countries - for whatever reason.
I can say without a doubt that Colombians in London stay in the Colombian community, as do many other groups - there are over 70 languages spoken in London - and the natural course of events is for most to mix with those they have most in common with.
I have no choice but to spend all day and every day with Colombians, I can honestly say that I don't know of one other Brit in Bogotá - sometimes I miss that, most times I don't give it a thought, but it would certainly make things easier for me if I were able to do business with other Brits in Bogotá and so I understand those who seek out their own nationalities and don't assimilate.

Well suba, if I return to Bogota I can make an attempt for you. I wasn't raised in Great Britian but my brother-in-law was. I have known him since I was 5 years old! My sister learned all the dishes from his mother, (who was Cockney). Grew up eating Yorkshire pudding, steak & kidney pie, and right now I would die for some 'toad-in-the-hole'!

"Nothing" wrong with tourists? No more than there is anything wrong with expats. Thanks wildstubby, whenever I want something different here I have to cook it myself. There's an English pub (I think they have the same sign as my avatar) called El ingles or something that does traditional British food.

Yeah, that was probably him, October 30th several years ago, Immigration took his laptop and camera when he arrived in the States. Don't know if they pursued it anymore than that, or if he got his stuff back. Surely, he should've seen the writing on the wall, but he was becoming an Internet Star, posting his escapades and stories on his web-sites and finally getting the attention of the powers that be to plot against him, his trial starts next month. www.miaminewtimes.com/news/cubadaves-sex-tourism-empire-in-jeopardy-6394213I don't ever remember seeing many, or any older gringos traveling to and fro, but maybe I missed those flights. I remember filling out the forms on the plane for my visits to Colombia, and there was this question, "Why are you coming to Colombia?" My answer always was, "Pleasure" And I had the office of Immigration ask me about why also, and I asked do you really need a reason? And they said yes, I told them the "weather" and laughed. But there's a lot of good reasons, the cheap health care, the weather, the low cost of living, etc.
