Flying from Bogota to IAD today and I was positive that I'd be upgraded but wasn't meant to be. Kofi Annan and his entourage were on the flight and hogged the entire section. Guy seemed pretty cool.

Just in case anyone else is wondering who Kofi Annan is, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kofi_AnnanYou never know who you might meet down here in your travels. I have a friend who knows or works with that Olympic Female BMX gold medalist who just recently won the gold medal, Mariana Pajon. Said if I want to meet her, to let him know. And I'm thinking, what would I say? Como estas? With my Spanish, it wouldn't be much. I haven't taken him up on it, yet. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kofi_Annan

Kofi Anan oversaw UN peace keeping during the Rwanda massacres, about 800,000 Tutsies and moderate Hutus killed. When rumors of the planned massacre started to circulate, a brave Canadian General, whose name escapes me, wanted to take preventive action to stop it. Kofi would not allow it, and all the French and Belgian "peace keeping" troops departed the country, and the massacre soon followed. And for such wanton disregard for people he was supposed to protect, Kofi was rewarded with a Nobel Peace Prize and appointed SG of the UN. A prince of a fellow.

Romeo Dallaire was the Canadian lieutenant general;UN peacekeeping in cen. Africa, his biggest command ever...he tried to warn them and no one listened. A year later he left Rwanda a broken man, having watched helplessly as more than 800,000 people perished in Rwanda's genocide despite his pleas for more troops to stop the massacre.

Sad, so easily preventable if good men like the General were making the decisions, instead of corrupt beaurocrats (sp) like Kofi.

I don't give a frog's patootie, therefore I don't know who they are. It's still good to know a few things about the world we're living in

A few good things Steve? I'm sure there's millions of other important things to know about the world we live in than the name of some UN official that has absolutely nothing to do with me.
