It's time for me to break down and buy a couple of PC's for the family. I have my work computer, and everybody else has been using tablets, but my two oldest are getting school assignments now where they really do need a PC. I haven't looked at the PC market in years since I've always had my work computer. I'm thinking that in the price range that I'm prepared to pay (COP $1.5 to 2.0 million each) it would be better to buy them here as I understand that computers in that price range are competitive with the USA. So, does anyone out there think that there are any stores/sources that I should definitely shop? I've looked at the websites for a few places (PriceSmart, Alkomprar, Exito), but there wasn't anything that made me think, "This is the place to buy a computer." I would much prefer something near Medellin, but I have to go to Bogota in the near future, so if there is something special there, I would consider that. Thanks in advance.

Check out Monterey Central Commercial next to to the Poblado Metro station - the entire mall is electronic stores.
Just for comparison:
We just bought a low end notebook for the oldest stepdaughter for college - $180 at Best Buy in Orlando - includes MS Office for one year.

That's a good thought, I haven't been there in a while and it's worth a look. My concern is that the place reminds me of an Arab bazaar. There are lots of little stores, and I have no idea how to tell the good guys from the ripoff artists. You've got me thinking about the notebook. I'm used to having an engineering computer with plenty of memory and a good processor, so I hate to buy something weak. However, that might be good enough for them for now, and if it's not, then I can upgrade later.

I recently bought a second H.P. laptop, Intel, 4 gb ram, 500 gb H.D, 14" screen even gave me a slip cover case, Win 10 installed for $560.000. pesos with full warranty from a shop at Monterey. Has DVD writer optical drive but no floppy but no longer a problem, I use USB flash drives now instead of even CD roms. If extremely large programs or files I use a 1 TB external.

I hadn't thought about used either. I've had good luck buying used TV's and some appliances, so it could work out here. You guys have convinced me - I will head down to Monterrey in the next couple of weeks. As for DVD's, our company doesn't even provide computers with DVD drives anymore. I've had my current DVD-less computer for about six months, and I've yet to run into a situation where I missed the drive.

If you have to go to Bogota, check Unilago mall, it's on carrera 15 with calle 77. Its a 3 story high mall dedicated to high tech (mostly computing). It's hundreds of shops in there. And several dozens of shops in the surroundings of the mall too.

This was brand new in a sealed box with full warranty.

There are so many little shops and each one has something different hidden away. Then, of course, you have to negociate the price... I owned and operated a computer store in Pereira for 6 years, imported IBM clone systems from Indonesia plus sold a lot of parts. The first thing you notice is that ALL of the retailers here virtually have the same items to sell because ALL of the PC parts in Colombia come from the same source, the parts like Monitors are bought by the car load from China or similar by LAUNDERED Mafioso money so all of the wholesalers, retailers all have the same items. Go to Monterey and ask any one of the shops for a special item and they are immediately on the phone to their wholesaler and 99 times out of 100 they say, nope don't have it. I bought most of my parts from the U.S., my son shipped to me and I had and sold many specialty items that you could not beg, borrow or steal in Colombia.

I had misread "second computer" as "second-hand computer" because the price was so low. If I can buy one new like that with a 14" screen, that seems like something better for the kids than a netbook. I'd actually prefer something bulky, as I do not want it to be convenient to take to a friend's house. I was even considering a desktop, but that's probably too inconvenient. Bill - can you share the name of the store where you bought it? Thx
