Chavez Supporters Turn Out in Caracas to Express Loyalty to Maduro
CARACAS – Hundreds of Venezuelan government backers marched Tuesday in downtown Caracas to demonstrate their “unity” and support for the Bolivarian Revolution and President Nicolas Maduro, less than 48 hours before the anti-government opposition is scheduled to take to the streets in a massive demonstration that has been dubbed “The Takeover of Caracas.”
The mobilization called by the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, or PSUV, urged supporters of Chavism to “take over the streets” of the country in the face of an alleged attempt by the opposition to stage a coup d’etat against Maduro, the successor to the late Hugo Chavez, who founded and was the driving force behind Venezuela’s socialist government.
“The people are on the streets only to demonstrate their love for a political project, their support for President Nicolas Maduro, their defense of the Constitution and the Bolivarian Revolution,” First PSUV Vice President Diosdado Cabello, who headed the march, told reporters.
Cabello, considered to be one of the key figures in Chavism, said that the march is intended to motivate the party’s activists and supporters to take control of the streets for several days to “guarantee the peace.”
The opposition march called for next Thursday is being staged to draw anti-chavistas from all over the country to the capital for a huge demonstration to pressure the election authorities to set a date for the recall referendum whereby government opponents are hoping to oust Maduro.
The Venezuelan administration, however, has claimed that the opposition is attacking the government’s stability and has staged assorted raids and other moves to disrupt the alleged plans for violence at the march.
Authorities say that the opposition is planning to repeat the activities of the failed 2002 coup that briefly removed Chavez from power, a coup that the government has blamed on the United States.
“The same script, the same actors, the same tall tale against the fatherland ... the (U.S.) State Department is orchestrating a coup d’etat directly against the Venezuelan government and the people of Venezuela,” Cabello said on Tuesday.
