MIAMI, USA -- Colombia continues to position itself as an innovative country in the health industry. It stands out among other countries in Latin America for its highly complex quality procedures performed by some of the top rated and highly trained medical personnel.
The International Hospital of Colombia opened on July 28. It has a total area of 2.5 million ft2, 1,192 beds and will offer surgery, outpatient, diagnostic support and therapeutic services. This is a specialized medical center part of the Colombian Cardiovascular Foundation (FCV).
“It is a modern building that has acquired the most advanced technology from the best suppliers in the market. It has the only robotic pharmacy in Latin America, with top-of-the-line diagnostic equipment, automated and airtight surgery rooms with laminar flow system – which allows us to have a germ-free zone -- avoiding potentially contaminated air to circulate aimlessly inside the operating room,” said FCV president, Victor Raúl Castillo Mantilla.
In addition to being built with the highest quality standards, the Cardiovascular Foundation and the International Hospital secured a ten-year partnership with University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, one of the most prestigious institutions in the US and around the world regarding cardiovascular medicine and oncological treatments.
“UPMC is the largest service provider of cancer patients in the world serving approximately 100,000 patients per year. Thanks to their experience and know-how, their team of professionals will help us get the best results in this particular area,” Castillo noted.
Located in the Piedecuesta municipality, very close to Bucaramanga, a city in northeastern of Colombia and characterized by its specialized medical treatment services, this new hospital will further raise Colombia’s brand as a medical tourism destination.
“For the past two decades Colombia has treated international patients seeking ophthalmology, cardiology, odontology and oncology treatments among other specialties – all with the highest-quality and trained medical personnel. There are several advantages for those seeking health services including the growth of different development hubs and cities in Colombia, which means more options for patients. It is also important to highlight the hospital infrastructure, its assortment and the quality offered in the country, specially for highly-complex and specialized services and the professionalism of physicians,” said Felipe Jaramillo Jaramillo, president of ProColombia, the official entity in charge of promoting exports, tourism and investment.
According to the Immigration Department, there were 10,243 foreign travelers who arrived in Colombia to receive medical treatments during 2015. This was a 6.4% increase over the previous year. Between January and May 2016 there were 5,682 foreign travelers who arrived in Colombia for this same reason. This represents a 29.2% increase versus the same period the year before.
Most of these patients are from the Dutch Caribbean islands (Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire, St Maarten), the United States, Venezuela and Ecuador.
A study carried out by ProColombia concluded that medical services in Colombia, in addition to its quality standards, can be up to 40% more affordable than those performed in the United States. Additionally, it has a privileged geographical location with access to the rest of the continent and highly-trained human capital, as confirmed by international organizations such as Joint Commission International, which certified the Cardiovascular Foundation, one of the four accredited hospital institutions that support patient safety and quality of healthcare.
Another added value is that 22 hospitals in the country are among the 43 best hospitals in Latin America, according to the America Economia ranking for the sector. The Cardiovascular Foundation of Colombia ranks fifth in this index.
The International Hospital of Colombia seeks to position itself within the region as one of the institutions with highest standards of quality for medical attention. This new venture hopes to attract more tourists to experience Colombia’s top medical services.
