We are staying next to Oviedo, was at the mall twice yesterday in late afternoon and early evening, One thing that has stuck out the last couple of days is how much police are around , even the wife thought it was a heavy presence, if a bad guy tried to rob someone he picked a well policed area.
There must be some politico staying at our hotel, lots of plainclothes security hanging out front
We will ask a security guard at the mall today what went down.

my friend came here after , was little shaken up by it, she say the gringo couldnt understand what the robber was saying, but she said after he got shot in the leg and went to the ground, the robber took his watch, so i am guessing here, the idiot was wearing a nice watch, which is just stupid in medellin.

Most of the armed robberies I have witnessed or heard of have occurred within plane view of multitudes of people. There seems to be absolutely no fear of being caught.

because they know nobody is going to risk their lives for somebody else, they know they are the only ones with a gun, they know the police are a joke and are never around UNTIL something goes bad,

premontion that's the same. Yes, two men on a bike is big danger. Most of the violence is coming from that. Not much to do for police close. Before they know what happened they are away with the bike.

Colombia had this problem of robberies and killings from motos almost stopped when they put into law the Placa # had to be on the bike, Vest and Helmet of the driver and passenger. Santos let this drop because of so many liberal politicians cried it was a unfair cost to poor moto owners.

because they know nobody is going to risk their lives for somebody else, they know they are the only ones with a gun, they know the police are a joke and are never around UNTIL something goes bad ,This is almost comical, one day AFTER an incident the streets are crawling with police. As if the culprits are going to hang around waiting for the police to show up. Closing the gate after the horse is gone, I don't get it?

Haha - English classes for bad guys Repeat after me " I have a gun" "Give me your wallet'" "Give me your watch" "That better not be a fake Rolex"
I would give them a pass on shooting someone wearing a fake Rolex in Medellin
Teaching the women would be much easier They just need to know how to say " hey baby, how you doing"

FFS, don't sport bling when you are walking around Colombian streets. And dress not to stick out. I haven't been in Poblado in several years, but it sure seems like the government is dropping the ball on street crime.

When the women I was with asked for my phone to put in their pocketbook, I didn't hesitate. My one amiga knew I had hesitated about coming to Medellin before because of the blatant criminal activity and I was advised by 2 separate people not to go. After my events in Bogota, I felt a little more confident and could blend in with the local 'gente'. But I kept my head on a swivel and I didn't wear cargo shorts with flip-flops!!!!!

Not sure Bogota is any safer. My wife has 25 nieces and nephews living in Bogota-16 have been robbed at knife and or gunpoint. My wife's older sister and husband have been robbed at gunpoint 2 times this year. All live in strata 5 and 6. My mother in law is 88 and has never been robbed-so I guess some luck or fate may have some bearing. I know if the mother in law was ever kidnapped that it wouldn't be long before the kidnappers offered money to come get her.

Colombians don't perceive Bogotá is safe according to a recent survey of 12,548 in Colombia in terms of citizens feeling safe in their barrio and city. See survey results here in Spanish: redcomovamos.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Presentaci%C3%B3n-EPC-Comparada-2015_RedC%C3%B3moVamos_02122015_.pdfIn terms of feeling safe in their city (slide 40), Bogotá was ranked the worst out of all the cities in Colombia surveyed with only 14 percent of respondents in Bogotá feeling safe in their city.

From what I have seen and heard living in Colombia, Bogota is the worst for street crime.
I have lived in Cali, Medellin and Manizales, and spent considerable time in Pereira and Armenia (and have spent time and have friends on Bogota)
Manizales is by far the safest of Any of these cities, but its still in Colombia, so best not to be complacent.
