There's a story on Colombia Reports about locals destroying town halls after the police dared to try to stop them smuggling God knows what, a guy ended up dead. One side says he was handling explosives to demonstrate how his smuggling rights were being violated. colombiareports.com/two-colombia-town-halls-attacked-amid-protests/This will no doubt lead to posters on here saying that they were only smuggling because they were poor. Until this attitude that "anything goes because we don't have enough money" changes, then Colombia will lurch from one crisis to the next and ultimately fall back into chaos.

That is the mentality they have from great grandfathers and on. Is the only thing the whole family and neighbors have done for decades, thus, is on their blood and the only thing they know how do to survive.

Maybe they didn't pay the "vacuna" to the cops?

Vacuna, only in Colombia. I hate this. Two cops came to my finca when we were making improvements when we first got it. They asked for beer, lol, would you believe that? No beer here because this is a Christian Center, so they asked for gas money for their motos. The pastor who sold me the finca gave them 10K pesos. He said it was better to do so and having them be against you for many other things.
They kept coming after that but never even went to greed them at the gate. The cuidadero used to tell them we where away traveling. Is not the money, but the principle. I hate supporting crime.

I agree with your principle , but I would advise you to give them something. Send the cuidadero out to the gate with some ice water or a couple cans of soda pop.

Building good relationships with officials is key to a peaceful business in Colombia. I wouldn't turn them down so harshly. have a chit chat with them from time to time, ask them about their families, if they have kids, how they are doing at school, typical Colombian chit chat. And then from time to time, hand them a few bucks over, you know, for the kids, their birthdays, new school year, any celebration... They will value this much more than a flat cold 10mil bill given "de mala gana".

Remember Martin Scorsese's Casino? Robert DeNiro as Sam Rothstein made an enemy out of the County Commissioner "por gusto" and, what a coincidence, it was all down hill after that. The advice above is exactly how I'd handle it.

This will no doubt lead to posters on here saying that they were only smuggling because they were poor. What poster on here do you suspect of claiming such nonsense? The same ones that have defended this attitude in the past on many occasions. I won't name people, what would be the point?, but there are Colombians on here that would defend such actions and a general tendency to excuse Colombian wrongdoing whilst coming down like a ton of bricks should a gringo transgress even slightly. Don't get me wrong, the guy who has just been arrested for pedalling young girls should be hung from the nearest lamp post, but there definitely exists an attitude of "well they are poor, they have nothing else" when it comes to Colombians doing the same. There are many parts of the world where poor people exist in conditions as bad if not worse than some of these protesters, they don't go around burning down town halls because they believe in their God given right to be criminals. The whole "no dar papaya" thing stems from the same belief system, that a gringo (or anyone else for that matter) is really not a victim if he or she dares to wear a nice watch, they are poor so mugging folk who aren't is all they know. It's a pathetic mindset and the perpetrators just want an easy way to riches rather than working for them.
