Actually becoming part of the metropolitan area of Valle de Aburrá, which includes Medellín, Barbosa, Girardota, Copacabana, Bello, Itagüí, La Estrella, Sabaneta y Caldas. So Envigado is the 10th municipality in the valley to join. Envigado will still be a separately administered municipality but as part of the Valle de Aburrá metro they can now participate in joint infrastructure projects and planning.

So actually there is no change then. Just part of a club. Is this what we call counties at the states?

It sounds like Envigado joined what is called in the US a Metropolitan Planning Organization to facilitate regional planning. And in this case, it will probably entail a little bit more. Sabaneta was once part of Envigado, but seceded in the late 60s to form its own municipality.

Very good explanation my good friend Vago. Now, why did Envigado split and half became Sabaneta? Sewer problems? I can imagine when that happened all the pro Sabaneta people sahying: "You guys stink, we are now Sabaneta and you stay in your own side".

In other words, someone made a lot of money off the split.
