No mention of salary as usual.
I've had a few job offers here from developers, each and every one of them refused to mention the salary because it was crap. If it were a good package that would be highlighted in bold letters in order to attract the right calibre of people.
My wife is a simultaneous interpretor and translator here, she works with foreign delegations, government ministers etc etc. She often gets offers from companies here, they ask for x years of experience, this qualification and that qualification, the ability to translate technical documents and work under pressure translating all different dialects in English, from Nigerian English to God knows what. She can do all that, has all the quals and the experience and so on.
They never mention the money until the interview and invariably they think 3 million COP per month is a good wage for all this. She used to go to the interviews and then politely decline when the money was finally mentioned, then she started asking as soon as the interview started to save sitting through the corporate bullshitter telling her what a great company she would be working for and how it was an experience not to be missed etc etc etc.
She's worked for herself for three years now, charges roughly per day what Colombian companies want to pay per month.

Crazy! I thought that was the going rate for software developers in Bogota? Haven't they heard there's a worldwide shortage of IT/software resources?

Crazy! I thought that was the going rate for software developers in Bogota? Haven't they heard there's a worldwide shortage of IT/software resources? The going rate for a freshly graduated software ENGINEER would be below 2 millions, maybe 2.5 in the best companies. The job offer I mentioned is particularly hilarious. In a decent company, the same role would be between 8 to 12 millions. 3 times more. And then you wonder why Colombian companies always have deficient IT.

In Colombia a lot of stuff is still done manually. You go to el Centro in Cartagena and there are about 15 guys with portable manual typewriters that for a fee they will make any document you need. This is right on the sidewalk. If they make a mistake, either fix it by hand and give you a crappy looking document or type it again. And thinking of it, is the first time I saw a typewriter in many years.
