Peasant leaders of the municipality of El Bagre, in the region of Bajo Cauca Antioquia, reported Tuesday before the Ombudsman that there have been 17 killed so far this year by paramilitaries, officially demobilised in 2006.
"So far this year there are 17 murders. We believe they are more but there are many that we could not register because they occurred in the upper parts of the region and could not have complete information, "says Mauricio Sanchez, one of the leading farmers in this county.
Sanchez is located in Bogota and speaks on behalf of his colleagues to "to enlighten" the authorities on the events since late last year in El Bagre, a jungle town in which there is the presence of the FARC, the ELN and the AUC self-styled Gaitanistas, or 'The Urabeños' paramilitary origin.'The Urabeños, the largest criminal gang in the country formed after the demobilisation of the Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC) in 2006, it's the view of the peasant leaders,paramilitary groups are responsible for the murders,accusers say fifty armed men identified and uniformed were searching the area to fulfil their objectives.
"We know that they are paramilitaries because that identify when they do these facts and killings that have occurred in El Bagre, in the village, the only group operating in that area are Gaitanistas Autodefensas" said Sanchez.
Four of the co-Sanchez have been dismembered "and thrown into the river," others have been buried in mass graves; It all has told the Ombudsman's waiting for them to extend the security measures currently gives them the National Protection Unit (NPU), under the Ministry of the Interior.
