I just had a near miss I reckon. I called an Uber and the driver gave me a long speech about problems on Autopista and the need to use a different route. We drove for five minutes and then his car started cutting out. Eventually he turned off the main road and said he was just making a detour to change his car - I gave him a mouthful of foul language and told him to pull over immediately and got out. Don't know whether it was genuine but he was miraculously a block away from where he said he would be able to change the car by taking this different route.
At the very least he took me up there because he knew his car was about to break down, at worst God knows.

Did you report the incident to Uber through the app?

Yes, waiting for a reply. You have to rate the driver before taking another Uber so i let them know, to add insult to injury the fare had gone up to x1.4 - bastards. They're usually good though so I'll probably get that back.
As an aside I walked to the end of the road before submitting the review in case the driver got shirty, looked back and his head was under the hood, so don't know whether he was just staying close to home because he knew the car was dodgy, either way I wasn't taking a chance - changing cars, balls to any of that.

Maybe the chauffeur was genuinely having a technical problem, but better safe than sorry, especially in Colombia. I think you made the right choice.

Cars breakdown all the time. But you usually just get out and get anther taxi. Yes a bit strange he was going off route. 95% it was legit, but better to be safe than sorry.

My wife and I have been utilizing taxi's more recently to go to Dr. appointments in obscure parts of Medellin that we don't know. Not so much because of danger but easy to get lost and miss appointments. Even though we may be at a clinic or other medical facility my wife refuses to take a taxi that is waiting in line for passengers. She calls the taxi company so there is a record and we wait for a designated taxi and driver. It costs the same so why not be safe.
