I was about to send an email to the Pacho guys but thought I might as well start a thread.
In a nutshell I'd like to start making wine and wondered if anyone had actually found any kits here in Bogota (or Colombia) or should I say any equipment, demijohns, airlocks etc.
I know you guys were making some out there and could do with a few pointers on where to get the bits and pieces from.
Ta.

scumbuster is the wine making expert......but he is currently very busy on an other project. Maybe he can find a few minutes spare time to join in this conversation?

suba I didn't have any luck sourcing anything to make wine in Colombia. I did make a decent table wine with concord grape juice from Price Smart. I brought everything else I needed from the states. If your still interested I can give you a list of what you need to get started. The Welch's concord grape juice wasn't bad after it aged 6 months or so. You can also get 1 gallon bottles of cranberry juice that is good mixed about 30% cranberry with the grape juice. I make notes of all I make so I can reproduce it if its really good. Probably need to make a 5 gallon batch.

Thanks for that. Is there nothing here that can be used in place of demi johns?
Thinking about it, with the amount of drinking that happens here surely someone importing wine kits would make money? The wine sold here is ridiculously priced, what we buy at 3 bottles for $12 is sold at 30,000 each here.

I can easily get Chilean grapes and juice in the US so you would think you could get it in Colombia at only 1/2 the distance.
Not many interested in making wine in Colombia. If you can afford the overpriced wine in Colombia you don't want to be bothered in making it yourself.

I did use the 5 gallon plastic water bottles to ferment in. You do the primary fermentation in a 5 gallon bucket then let it finish and age in the 5 gallon jugs. I think the grape and grape/cranberry were the best and I liked the mango.. But berru and Dan really liked the guava.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to make it from scratch using the 5 gallon buckets and the plastic jugs. Scumbuster did you use a hydrometer (probably a stupid question given where we live) and did you use airlocks?
Many years ago I made a hydrometer with straws and blu tack, basically the blu tack goes over the the end of the straw and you sick a couple of nails in the other end and adjust until it floats in water. Water has a SG of 1 and you mark this off on the glass then do the same with vinegar and mark that off etc etc and blah blah blah. Anyway you end up with a scale marked on the glass that can tell you the alcohol content of any liquid and you add sugar to up the required potency.
Not sure I can be arsed with all of that anymore, so Scumbuster, how much sugar did you use per gallon or whatever?

I actually did use a hydrometer and air locks. I brought the stuff little by little when I was coming down on vacations. Size it up to the volume you want but 2 gallons of water and 14 cups of sugar gives you an alcohol potential of 14.5%. Any fruit you add will lower that. I usually added about 5 cups of crushed fruit to that taking it down to about 11%. You will have to heat the water to dissolve the sugar.. Might try plum wine..

The Mora wine is tasty with a little age to it over 4 months if it lasts longer is better.
