My Colombian RE Visa was expiring next month so I applied for a new one. I submitted the on-line application and in 3 days got an email that it was approved. Flew to Bogota, paid the balance and in 10 minutes my new visa was in my passport. I was surprised at the ease and efficiency-something that is not always seen in Colombia.
The only down side of the whole process was that my suegra lives in Bogota.

Yep attitudes to foreign visitors have changed drastically. Six years ago the whole visa application process meant that you were treated like cattle. Now they lay out a welcome mat - can't be anything to do with the country not being as prosperous as it once was and needing the dollars can it?

Getting DAS out of it and letting MRE handle it all has helped with the change drasticly.

Look at the US visa process in comparison to the now much more efficient Colombian visa process...

Hey, maybe I will update my cedula. I have an old one but gave up on them. Everytime mine got back renewed, it was already expired. I am only about 4 to 6 months a year. I also gave up on updating my visa because it was cheaper to pay the multa.

If you are saying that you are not entitled by law to have a residency visa if you live here less than six months a year, that is incorrect. You can lose your visa if you do not come to Colombia for a long period of time, but that duration is something like two or three years. If you meant that it is not worth the effort to get a visa if you are in the country less than six months a year, I agree.

Our plans are to move permanently to Colombia, then I will have the required paperwork done, but for now I will just keep doing as I have been doing. My visas all expired way back. I started with a pensionado visa, then conyugue, etc. I also qualify for visa inversionista. But loving it so much there, I may just go for ciudadania in the near future.

I am sure the laws have changed since I first got my Visa/Cedula many years ago.Back then on my first temp Cedula I had to be in Colombia once every 6 months to keep it, but that had no time of days I had to be here just that I was registered in the Country.
