Way too hard to get into Sabaneta if you are coming from Engivado - they widened the road until just before Sabaneta - and then gridlock getting in - ave Las Vegas is a bit better, but things are going to get worse with the continuing building of towers - I lived there about 5 years ago for 2 years - I liked it a lot - I always go back when I visit - but instead of making two trips I make one - just don't want the hassle of the traffic if I want to go on a Friday or Saturday night. I dated a woman who lived in the Aves Maria Towers behind the mall - it was pretty empty then , its much worse now - are the restaurants outside still open, they had great views - but below average food. I used to walk Sabaneta all the time - day /night - never a problem, outside of the parque area never saw another gringo - used to play basketball Sunday mornings next to the only tennis courts in town ( by football stadium and pool) - always thought it would make a good retirement spot - back then - not sure now - we havelots family in Envigado - above the parque - would not like to travel that route much on a weekly basis if we lived in Sabaneta in the future , wan't bad 5 years ago.

How does this effect the typical gringo on Medellin, not much other than to live a low key lifestyle , and keep your personal business quiet. There seems to be a prevailing attitude amongst ex-pats that Medellin is getting more dangerous, it could be and the statistics just have not caught up. I still think driving is the most dangerous thing an ex pat can do however , or riding my moto, but as I tell the wife , the life insurance doubles if it's an accident, getting shot by a bad guy she gets half as much. I agree. Keep a low profile with a low key lifestyle with your personal business to yourself and you will avoid most problems. Many of the expat homicides and many of the other expat deaths that I am aware of trace back to suspected drugs, resisting a robbery or suspected involvement with prepagos, sex tourism, sketchy woman and the likes. I know many expats living a low key lifestyle like I do haven't had any problems. Most of the apartments in the Medellín area I have lived in have 24x7 porterias and I have added security doors in two of them so no worries while I am at home or away on vacation. Just as a side note, the only way to consider 24/7 porterias as a security feature is to tie bells to the guys manning your gate so you can hear them running away when the bad guys come.

I would never call under paid doormen security.Colombian cops will take 50k to look the other way even less for a security guard.

Standard doors on most apartments wouldn't take much time for a thief to break into - I saw some that had been broken into in my previous apartment building. The 24x7 porterias pretty much are only good to call you when domicilio arrives and to filter out riff-raff and visitors. But IMHO it's better than being in place without a porteria.

With the doormen it's like with everybody, treat them well and they will treat you well. I give them every year on christmas some money, never had any problem. In our unity there are no big problems with robbery.

Vet bills are cheap in Colombia but all shots and wormings I do my self. The last box of shells 25 00 buck 12gauge was 50k but delivered to my door.
Some one is at my house all the time if I am here or not so feeding the dogs is no problem.

i know several who have been robbed a gunpoint in medellin, in al parts of medellin, bello, poblado, laureles, belen, itagui. its only a matter of time, it happens to just about everybody, unless you live like a hermit and never leave your 2 sq mile radius.

I do not know whether you have this service in Medellin but here in Pereira we have "red de seguridad de Cerritos". Coming from Cartagena to here I was quite amazed with the customer service and variety of services with this company.
We live a bit outside of the center (10min) in a condominio in the nature. In all condominios you can opt to rent security equipment, motion detectors and sensors on the windows, panic buttons in three rooms. Pay a 100.000 installation cost, and just about 20.000 a month for rent and basic services. This includes live monitoring of your house. They basically call within 30 seconds when alarm goes off. 24/7 assistance of security on moto within the city, remote control of your house, etc.. F.e. if you have teenagers and they go out, they can get an "escolte" (small premium), Private ambulance within max. dozen minutes, towing of car (small premium) and it goes on...
I was not too worried about this, but my wife from Bogotá feels very comfortable with this. Still we have very professional condo security additionally, and i have lived in 5 condominio´s or apartment blocks within Colombia before this, which was nothing compared with this.

The only place on earth that I've ever had a weapon pulled on me is Manizales. All four of my baby mama's brothers in Manizales have been stabbed or shot or both and they are not involved in drugs, all were robberies. Last year one of them damned near died after being stabbed and robbed of about 30K,ten f**king dollars. Manizales has had an increase in crime proportionate to Medellin over the last few years in my opinion, that's why I pulled the plug on living in Colombia. I still visit but I have no desire to live there any longer. That said,if I was forced to live in a Colombian city I would choose Manizales but I can live anywhere so I chose living on the beach in the caribbean, cheaper and safer but still not Kansas Dorothy.

Aside from someone stealing my sneakers overnight from a second story window sill, I never have been robbed in Colombia (unless you count a deadbeat "loan" jejeje). Several runins with very shady EEUUers though.

You have to provide your own security and trust no one. My wife's uncle is a very wealthy businessman in Medellin. He lived in a two story 650 meter apt. in the Poblado or he did until recently. He had just returned from Miami and was alone except for the maid and the doorman. Four Ladrones over powered the Portero and came to Jose's apt on the sixth floor and knocked very loud and told the maid that they were the Fiscalia and insisted on talking to her Patron. Like a freakin idiot she let them in and they robbed whatever they could see. Jose just returning from Miami only had U.S. dollars and no pesos in the house, they stole $3,500. dollars that he had returned with. After putting two and two together they decided that the maid had to be in on the deal, very common for even those who have been with you for years and you trusted. Not only strata six but supposedly very secure and one of the most expensive units in Poblado. He had lived there for 25 years with no problem.

Nothing worse than an uncomfortable wife!

How many more people would have survived in Orlando if club security had permits to carry? Criminals don't seek permits, they just carry.
