Uruguay Will Send Military Observers to Post-Conflict Colombia MONTEVIDEO – Uruguay will send military observers to Colombia once the Bogota government signs a peace agreement with FARC rebels, the Uruguayan deputy defense minister said Wednesday. “We are working on that and it will happen after peace is signed, not before,” Jorge Menendez said following a military parade in Montevideo to mark the 205th anniversary of the Battle of Las Piedras, a key event in Uruguay’s independence struggle. “We have already passed the names of a number of officers and subordinates volunteering to form a contingent of observers who will be present in Colombia,” he said. The Uruguay military expects to send as many as 15 people to Colombia and is now evaluating the details of the mission, Menendez said. The plan calls for the observers to be deployed 10 days after a peace agreement is signed, he said. In a related matter, Menendez said the Defense Ministry is studying the potential participation of Uruguayan troops in a peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic, though the United Nations has yet to issue a request. laht.com/article.asp?ArticleId=2412506&CategoryId=23620
