Maduro: U.S. Spy Plane Violated Venezuelan Airspace
CARACAS – A U.S. military aircraft “with lethal technical abilities” illegally entered Venezuelan airspace twice over the past week, President Nicolas Maduro said on Tuesday.
“Our military aviation detected the illegal entry, for unusual espionage tasks, of the Boeing 707 E-3 Sentry, which is an airborne early warning control center system that has all the mechanisms for espionage,” said Maduro during a press conference at the presidential palace.
This kind of aircraft, he said, is used by Washington “to support communications of armed groups in warzones or to prepare actions to disable electronic equipment (of the) government, the armed forces or the economy.”
Commonly known as AWACS, the E-3 Sentry is described by Boeing and the Pentagon as an airborne early warning and control aircraft,
The U.S. aircraft made two illegal incursions into Venezuelan airspace, one on May 11 at 6:03 a.m. and the second on May 13 at 6:09 a.m., Maduro said.
The plane was intercepted, he said, by the Venezuelan air force, which obliged it to exit the country’s airspace, adding that the incursions “are going to be severely protested to the United States government.”
Maduro made his statement after emphasizing that Venezuela is experiencing one of the worst threats in more than 10 years, announcing a “political counteroffensive” to deal with it.
A state of exception and economic emergency was declared by Maduro in Venezuela to deal with the alleged threat of a coup d’etat being orchestrated – he claimed – from the United States.
The Venezuelan leader asserts that the country is being steered by foreign agents, supported by internal allies, “to a situation of generalized violence” with an eye toward justifying foreign military intervention.
