April 2016 had the lowest number of homicides in Medellín in 37 years. The count was 22 homicides in Medellín last month, which is down from 34 homicides in April last year and also down from 30 homicides last month. April was the only month since 1979 where there were less than 30 homicides in the city. The first two months of the year were not so positive. In January there was a 48% increase in homicides over the same month last year and 43% in February. But in March the count dropped to 30, which was down from 46 cases in March 2015. According to the Mayor, also in the city in April, theft from commercial establishments dropped 16%, burglaries decreased by 33% and theft of vehicles dropped 32% and motorcycles dropped 4%. See (in Spanish): www.elcolombiano.com/antioquia/seguridad/homicidios-en-medellin-abril-fue-el-mes-menos-violento-CX4077433There has been a trend in Medellín of lower homicide rates over the past several years, with the homicide rate in Medellín dropping to the lowest in 40 years last year. Medellín has now dropped out of the list of the 50 most violent cities in the world due to its lower homicide rate.

Air is too bad for the sicarios to breathe so they stay indoors. The air quality has improved recently in Medellín with the return of more frequent rain. May is typically the second rainiest month of the year in the city. You can see the air quality in different parts of Medellín on El Colombiano's homepage - www.elcolombiano.com/.

The new mayor in Medellín is serious about fighting crime and has increased the budget for crime fighting and social investment, which now totals 6.2% of the city budget.

This did answer part of my questions. What are the stats outside of the city limits ? If some one throws their garbage in their neighbors yard it is not getting rid of the garbage.

The new mayor in Medellín is serious about fighting crime and has increased the budget for crime fighting and social investment, which now totals 6.2% of the city budget. You are correct about that 6.2% number. This is what the mayor tweeted yesterday: "El 6.2% del presupuesto del Plan de Desarrollo #MedellínCuentaConVos es destinado a Seguridad integral." Also tweeted the reduction in crimes: -Hurto establecimientos comerciales reducción 16%. -Hurto residencias reducción 33% -Hurto carros reducción 32% -Hurto motos reducción 4% See: twitter.com/alcaldiademed

I hope it is a trend and not an outlier month, but good news. I remember years ago when some in Pereira decide to do some limpieza social, and started dumping bodies of known thieves and robbers in Plaza Bolivar, crime suddenly and dramatically dropped in Pereira, but caused an a just as dramatic jump in Cali, where it seemed many of the bad guys temporarily migrated to. It has been reported that those thieves whose bodies were dumped in the Plaza Bolivar never committed a crime again, although not confirmed.
