Riots Hit Venezuelan Cities over Power and Water Cuts, Food Shortages CARACAS – A series of violent disturbances erupted in several Venezuelan cities over frequent power and water cuts and longstanding food shortages, regional officials and media outlets said Wednesday. The governor of the northwestern state of Zulia, Francisco Arias Cardenas, said on Wednesday that “destabilizing actions” had taken place in the city of Maracaibo, looting and rioting that the local media says were caused by people upset over regular drought-triggered water and electricity cuts. In the central cities of Maracay and La Guaira, roadblocks and tire-burning protests were reported. “We know that far-right groups finance these incidents; those who bankroll these actions cannot be accepted, nor come to power,” Arias said on his Twitter account. The governor noted that these violent acts “will not make it rain in the river basins. We’re facing a natural phenomenon; we’re sure the rains will come.” Zulia’s security and public order secretary, Biagio Parisi, said on that same social networking site that “we’ve reinforced patrolling of the downtown area and commercial establishments. More than 25 people have been arrested for looting in the city” of Maracaibo. According to Panorama, a daily in Zulia state, the disturbances began Monday in Maracaibo and other areas to protest power cuts “exceeding 24 hours” and stretched into Tuesday. President Nicolas Maduro said Tuesday that a presidential commission will be installed in Zulia to address the consequences of the El Niño-triggered drought, though adding that he will not allow violent protests to continue. laht.com/article.asp?ArticleId=2410934&CategoryId=10717
