Please remind me what the dollar allowance is for US purchases brought to Colombia before you have to start paying IVA. I recall $1600 but that may be wrong or may have changed. Also what is the policy for bringing liquor in?

It's USD $1,500 and 2 bottles of booze. In my experience, they will let you slide with 3 or 4. No more than $10,000 cash or bearer bonds. See here for some additional rules: www.iatatravelcentre.com/CO-Colombia-customs-currency-airport-tax-regulations-details.htmOne thing that they don't mention is that there are specific types of products that they can tax even if you are not at the $1,500 limit. I know shoes and car parts are on the list. One time, I had about 30 pairs of inexpensive shoes with me and I had to pay a tax on them. They didn't really have an organized way to figure the tax, so we settled on COP $100,000. Another time, I had two tires and some small car parts. The customs agents said they were supposed to charge tax on all imported car parts, but she didn't really know how to calculate it, so she let me slide. She said that if I had much more with me she would have had to send me to the office to wait for a superior to arrive to figure it out.

Thank you. It sounds like you made out pretty well. I don't know if it's still on the back of the declaration form but a few years ago it said No auto parts or guns were allowed entry. I brought in some shock absorbers back then and also a liquid that the TSA pricks didn't bother to reseal in the plastic baggie I had it in which spilled all over the contents of my bag so the inspector in Cali took pity and let me pass. Anyway thanks again and I'm ready for my next trip.

I buy my duty free booze when arrive in BOG;downstairs beside the international arrivals baggage carousel. The women there told me I could buy 8 bottles;so this last time I bought 2 bottles of rum (Botran Reserva,Solera $55) 3 bottles of wine + 1 lrg, bottle Crown Royal (Northern Harvest) I bought at YYZ duty free.
Never even asked at Colombian customs.

Regarding your rum I just bought a bottle of Flor de la Caña from Nicaragua (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flor_de_Ca%C3%B1a) at the duty free in San Andres. Pricy but that stuff is delicious! Wish I could get it in Cali.

Botran is made in Ron Zacapa factory (guatemala) later is about $55 duty free.I prefer Botran and it's cheaper too boot. I think I saw Flor de Caña in Exito,Jumbo...pricey but you may get it cheaper in San Andresito (Bogota) just watch out for chiviados (fakes) deal with someone who comes recommended. dandl93 may have some input.

I haven't seen Flor de la Caña in Exitos here abouts but they've been selling the Zacapa 23 year and 19 year for several months now. Also very good.

Yes, $1500 USD is the magic number. Never really questioned by DIAN at the airport, except once. 8 years ago, I brought 4 used XBoxes into the country and was asked for the invoice to determine value. I showed the Gamestop invoice, they reviewed it, determined I was under the limit and they let me pass. My wife and I use the Attenza duty frees in PTY and BOG, and bring in up to 6 bottles each. We always keep our eyes open for the Ron Botran promociones... that's our favorite rum.
