Hi all. I hope I am posting in the right section. If not, please let me know. This might sound kind of strange, but has anyone ever looked into building shipping container homes? I think you can get the refrigerator kind with stainless steel walls and styrofoam insulation. Of course they look funky, but they are supposed to be much cheaper to build with, and should go up quickly (and form follows function).
Could one perhaps pour a reinforced concrete slab, then bolt maybe 5 of the things together, and then cut out doors and windows as desired, and put a strong metal frame in the door and window frame holes, for support? And then just run the plumbing and wiring conduits exposed, in all of their beautiful glory (haha)?
I have never seen a shipping container home up close and personal, but they have all sorts of designs all over the internet where they bolt several of them together, and then polish out the stainless steel walls, so maybe you feel like you are living inside of a Delorean? (Haha.)
Of course the stainless steel does not breathe, but depending on the area, maybe a guy will be opening his windows during the day to let the warm air in, and then will be trapping the warm air in at night? So maybe the walls breathing isn't really a problem?
Has anyone ever looked into that? And if a guy wanted to explore that, where would he find used shipping refrigerator shipping containers? Just start calling around at the port?
Or is that a bad idea?
Thanks.
