Hi all. I read all the threads I saw on shipping, and did not find my answer. I am living in Chile, and want to move to Colombia for work reasons. I am contacting a bunch of shipping companies, and can figure that part out.
What I need to know is, what is the drill with regard to imported "household goods"? In Chile they give you a certain exemption if you are applying for residency. Is there a similar exemption in Colombia, or not so much?
I am not bringing any furniture or 220V appliances or anything like that. I just need to bring my work gear (a lot of electronics and home video gear), and also my clothing (because I am very tall). I could probably buy it again in Colombia, but I think it might be cheaper to ship it.
What percentage do they charge on shipments of household goods, and are there any exemptions for that? Thanks in advance. ("Estoy atento"... haha.)

Hey Mudd, sounds like a wise question. My thought was, if you want to pay a company to ship all of your stuff, aren't they happy to ship everything no matter whether or not it makes sense (because don't they make more money the more stuff they ship? And then maybe it is your problem whatever the tax bill is?? Or do I have that wrong??) So I thought perhaps to get some real "inside scoop" from those who have already made the transition, so I could decide how much of my stuff it makes sense to bring, or not. Did I think wrong?

As Mudd said you need to contact freight forwarders , shipping companies. I would contact companies in Colombia as well. Here is a customs broker in Cartagena www.aduanasgama.com/nuestra-empresa/You could start with these guys Chile and Colombia have a long standing free trade agreement. I've used this website to get some idea what I'd be up for. www.simplyduty.com/import-calculator/You get 5 free lookups.

Mudd, ozgringo, thank you. I have some meetings with shippers, and will check it out. (It helps a lot to know what to sell locally, or to lay to one side to give to friends.)

Probably any large size clothing or shoes you want to bring. Most things are pretty reasonable to buy in Colombia. Remember, Amazon has a warehouse in Bogota and Amazon has free home delivery in Colombia, on a lot of there inventory. Most things I took to Colombia years ago because it was hard to get or very expensive, are now readily available at a decent price.
