Well as the title says, the son had his wallet stolen while he was out, (late) in Ibague Thursday night. The usual stuff was taken, ie, credit cards, driver's license etc. But his green card was also stolen. So now he has to go through the procedure of obtaining a 'travel foil' so he can return to the US and hopefully obtain a replacement green card. Both his mother and I warned him about the perils of returning to Colombia where crime is at an all time high. Stay tuned, there may be something to be learned here if you may find yourself in a similar situation.

I can't help but note that something smells fishy here. They didn't take his X Iphone. Any kind of Apple products is very much sought after. If his green card 'magically appears, then I will know it is a sham. Because I have to pay for the travel foil with a credit card or money order. I personally think he overspent trying to be a 'rich gringo'. I told him he ought to try and sell some of his AirJordon shoes!

búfalo said: The details are real sketchy. I don't know if he was held at knifepoint or if he was pick-pocketed. There is a police report and they issued him a paper that he will need to take to the embassy to get the travel foil. Like I said, I'll update as I get more details. He said he will pay me back. I told him it will be a sh!tload of overtime to repay me. On another note, the whole time he was down there he hadn't wrote or called me or his mother. Now because his 'canteen' is empty, he is singing like a bird. Like my wife told me today, Colombianos are unappreciative!

So more of the story comes out. Apparently, the son was wearing a 'murse' and had his Iphone in his pocket. The word is a ladrone ran by and grabbed the murse he was wearing and took off with it.

When I go out in public, Colombia or Ecuador, I dont take anything I dont need.. A cheap little brick phone. Only take 1 debit card of the 4 we have, and my cedula. Enough cash for what we planned for the day. keep it separated into different pockets. Passport stays home. If I potentially needed it for ID, I would take a copy of relevant pages. Never had an issue but I know if I took a lot of valuables out, that is when something would happen.

scumbuster said: Same here. If I don't need it, I don't take it. That was a lesson I learned not once but twice. When I got pinched at El Dorado that time, I was fortunate that I put my money in my wallet and still had my passport in my shirt pocket. The perps took my laptop figuring that was where I put the money, (that I just pulled out of the ATM), and were bold enough to go into the hotel bus to rip it off!

So here's the deal, the son had to complete a USCIS form I-131A and make an appointment at the US embassy in Bogota. That is happening on the 16th. He has to take a 'passport' type photo with him. Payment is made in advance utilizing the alien number, (A-#) that was on his green card and the receipt that I had emailed to him. When he goes to the embassy they will issue him what's called a 'travel foil' which will be used to re-enter the US. If I read correctly, upon his return he will have to file a I-90 to get a replacement green card which is necessary for him to carry at all times until he has been issued unconditional permanent residence. I'll fill you in on that when he returns because that is speculation by me.

mudd said: Yep it is costing him $575 just for the travel foil. All it takes is a big hook to snatch that bag, (an arm will do)! I learned a long time ago to put my wallet in my front pocket. It is difficult for someone to pry you wallet out, (unless its a thin one), and chances are you will feel it moving as opposed to your rear end. Plus when you sit down you don't have that jabbing you in the back.

I thought I would take time and update the thread here. The son had his appointment at the embassy on Monday. He will get his passport back with the travel foil in about 10~15 days. But it cost him, (me, but he has promised to repay me! ), $575. When he returns, it will cost another $540 for a replacement green card. So there is the procedure and costs in a nutshell. One thing of note. He said he was treated way better that the embassy knew he already had a visa than those who were waiting for a visa.

So I suspect he will or I will take it out on his hide. I have plenty of projects waiting for an able-bodied person to do and he knows it!

Our congressional representatives are elected and paid to work in the best interest of US citizens, and instead they spend their time trying to increase benefits to illegals. It's obvious why, most people from Central America and Mexico eventually vote democrat. They dropped the humanitarian visage when the Cuban refugees were recently trying to escape and come over, then it was "We will not allow any Cubans to arrive illegally" "we have immigration laws" blah blah blah and suddenly they cared, only because Cubans vote Republican. Also look at the difference in treatments of people who commit a crime. If you're illegal, its "Pssst hey amigo go out that back door pronto, ICE is on the way, don't worry that you killed a US citizen with your DUI, just get out quick and remember to vote democrat."

It isn't the illegals rather the recent legals that abuse for the most part. They qualify for way more, get stimulus checks, unemployment, housing, foodstamps, etc. Not the illegals.

All my illegal friends have spent the pandemic either working or sweating it out because they weren't able to work.
All my legal ones either went to Colombia, etc. with "the money the govt. gave them", stayed there for several months, sometimes several trips, recieving unemployment. Others also put pools, etc. in their properties or even bought new properties, etc. The list goes on and on.
They are also stupid enough to talk openly about it while back here in the US. They wonder why 'those racist white people' give them dirty looks when they talk about doing all this. They really are quite clueless.
