US Must Halt Supply of Weapons to Colombia, Amnesty Says WASHINGTON – The United States must suspend its supply of arms to Colombia, where they are being used against protesters in the anti-government demonstrations, Amnesty International said on Thursday. The London-based organization verified that “United States weapons and equipment are being misused to commit human rights violations against protesters in Colombia.” Amnesty urged US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, to “immediately cease the direct or indirect supply, sale, or transfer of equipment used for repression.” The organization urged Washington not only to suspend the supply of firearms and ammunition, but also that of weapons considered “less lethal” used by riot police, such as tear gas and projectiles. It also asked the government of President Joe Biden not to provide Colombia with armored vehicles or surveillance technologies, nor training or any other type of technical or financial assistance. “Secretary Blinken has the power to stop the fear and terror that Colombian protesters are enduring, and he must do so immediately,” said Philippe Nassif, the advocacy director at Amnesty International US, in a statement. “The United States role in fueling ceaseless cycles of violence committed against the people of Colombia is outrageous,” he said, adding that “the United States government has been an agonizing party to the killing, disappearances, sexual violence and other torture, and horrendous repression of dozens of mostly peaceful demonstrations.” For this reason, he argued that the suspension of the supply of arms should be maintained until the Colombian security forces fully comply with international law, the abuses committed are investigated and those responsible are held accountable. Colombia is the US’ greatest ally in Latin America, and the Biden administration has appeared more cautious in criticizing abuses there than in other countries in the region. At least 43 people have been killed by Colombian law enforcement since the protests broke out, according to data from civil society organizations, including 18 victims of sexual violence, nearly 1,000 arrests and some 2,400 cases of police violence. www.laht.com/article.asp?ArticleId=2502023&CategoryId=12393

Biden increased the help to Colombia. He knows there is a high risk that Colombia will turn into a second Venezuelan if he stops helping Colombia.

US aid seems to be going to "relatively" (emphasis on thhe word) good use in Colombia Whereas all the tens of Billions China, Russia and Iran poured into Venezuela got pizzed away with nothing to show So the,"Belts and Roads" initiative doesnt always work

He knows there is a high risk that Colombia will turn into a second Venezuelan if he stops helping Colombia. colombias problem is corruption..... you can throw all the money in the world at colombia..... wont help That is the universal problem in Latin America and the developing world in general..corruption..not to mention human rights abuses Doesnt matter if its left wing or right wing Difference whereas with right wing governments like in Colombia and Chile post Pinochet, the shopping centres, airlines, restaurants and vacation resorts are full of growing middle class spending money and the cities are vibrant and historical cities like Cartagena are well maintained and full of tourists Whereas left wing governments , at least the extreme version , there is no middle class, a lot less construction of high rises and hotels and resorts and even less for shopping centres and apartments for locals and the cities have no vibrancy, the shoppping centres are empty, no internal tourism, struggling and stagnant economy.and historical colonial cities , like Havana are in ruin and falling apart

Name for me just one Socialist city, county or country that has been successful under Liberal leadership, there are none. The last one that worked was the Pilgrims. Even lesser mentality officials have to see this but unfortunately they ignore evidence.

Even lesser mentality officials have to see this but unfortunately they ignore evidence. Uruguay..highest standard of living in Latin America. But they are small with a European population. And they are not "hard" socialist..more inline with Northern European social democracy Not to mention Bolivias situation improved dramatically under Morales, from a very low starting point, mind you, and as a result of the minimg boom Also Correa at least spent the money on infrastructure in Ecuador, which is a lot better than Colombias Allthough he and Morales obviously were corrupt as well, and he sold out everything to the Chinese..oil fields, elctrical company, the highways and a lot of infrastructure. Classic vitim of Chinese "Belts and Roads" plan. Oh well, If Venezuela can expropriate property from US Companies, I am sure Ecuador and any other country can expropriate property the Chinese paid for.as China is starting to learn But hard core socialism, aka -communism- where the govrnment takes over the economic production process, like Venezuela, former Soviet Union, Cuba always fails, ultimately both economically and personal liberty wise. Whereas Crony-Capitalist Socialism, like in China, and like the West seems to now be going towards, may do well for the rich (Like you me and Mudd) but will not be good for the middle class in the long run, and will mean less freedom for everyone. Personally, I have nothing against Social Democratic Capitalist countries like exist in Scandinavia if that is what people want and vote for , and dont mind paying much higher taxes. But it is not for me. I am a liberatarian and preferto have as little government involvement as possible, and pay as low taxes as possible.
